Camila Fernández Curates Her Playlist on ‘Bomba Mix’

On the latest episode of Bomba Mix on LatiNation, we’re featuring the talented Camila Fernández. Camila shared her upcoming music and personal playlist that she curated to reflect her broad taste and unique personality.

Who is Camila Fernández?

Camila Fernández was born on November 30th, 1997, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. As the daughter of the famous Mexican singer Alejandro Fernández and América Guinart, and granddaughter of the legendary ranchera singer Vicente Fernández, Camila’s musical roots run very deep.

From a young age, Camila showed a keen interest in music and the arts. When she was an elementary school student in San Diego, California, she auditioned for the role of Motormouth Maybelle in the musical Hairspray. This experience marked a pivotal moment in her life, igniting her passion for music, particularly R&B, and setting her on a path toward a musical career.

Camila pursued formal musical training at the Semper Altius Music School in Guadalajara, where she studied a wide range of instruments including singing, violin, guitar, flute, ukulele, cajon, percussion, dance, ballet, theater, and music theory. Her dedication to learning was further enhanced by her studies at the La Jolla Piano Institute in California and a couple of cycles at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston between 2013 and 2015.

Her Musical Career

Camila made her debut as a singer on September 14th, 2014, performing alongside her father Alejandro Fernández at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. She captivated audiences with her rendition of the single “Hoy Tengo Ganas de Ti.” This performance was a milestone that marked her entrance into the world of professional music. She appeared on television for the first time, accompanied by her father on the program “Grandes Temas de Telenovela” in November 2014.

On her 18th birthday, November 30th, 2015, Camila signed a contract with Universal Music México and, in 2016, she collaborated on the album We Love Disney (Latino) with her father, performing “El Ciclo Sin Fin” from The Lion King. Her performance at the Billboard Latin Music Awards the same year further showcased her talent and potential.

From 2022 onwards, Camila’s career has been on an upward trajectory. She closed the Corona Capital Guadalajara 2022 with a mariachi performance, released a cover of “Amor Eterno,” and collaborated with the band Morat on a mariachi version of “Debí Suponerlo.” These projects highlight her ability to adapt and innovate within the regional Mexican music genre, establishing herself as a leading female voice in the Fernández dynasty.

Camila Fernández went on to release her first full mariachi album, “Camila Fernández,” on October 26th, 2023. The album features ten original songs and ten covers, a mix that combines the elegance, freshness, and dynamism of the present with the timeless appeal of classic melodies. Before the album’s launch, she released the single “Todo, Todo,” a fusion of nostalgic mariachi with a modern 21st-century sound. However, it is the focus track, “Here I Feel,” dedicated to her grandfather Vicente Fernández, that deeply highlights Camila’s deep connection to her musical heritage.

On October 28th, Camila made her first performance in the United States at Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles. She has also been chosen as the ambassador of Equal México, a Spotify playlist highlighting Mexican female musical talent, and was named a Pandora “Artist to Watch 2024”.

Camila Fernández Curates Her Playlist on Bomba Mix

In our Bomba Mix episode, Camila opened up about her personal playlist and shared some stories about her favorite songs:

For Feeling Like a Superwoman:
“My idols growing up, apart from my mom and grandmother, who also sing mariachi, were Lucha Villa. She was one of the first women to sing mariachi songs and wear the charro outfit as it should be. A song by Lucha Villa that I love and sing with my grandmother is ‘El Mariachi de Mi Tierra,’ which talks about Guadalajara and always puts me in a great mood.”

Teenage Anthem:
“My teenage years were around 2010/2011, not the best times. But after puberty hit, things got better. I listened to a lot of Calle 13, believe it or not, and I loved ‘Atrevete.’ I feel that René has a high IQ, and everything he touches is art.”

For the perfect Mexican Vibe:
“All the songs from my album could fit here. ‘Mexico Lindo y Querido’ by Jorge Negrete is definitely the song that everyone, even non-Mexicans, can identify with. I’ve always sung it with my dad and grandfather during family parties. Those famous Sundays with mariachi.”

Dedication to Mom:
“‘Wind Beneath My Wings’ by Bette Midler is a song I always sing to my mom, and my dad too.”

Getting Ready Jams:
“Anything by Beyoncé. Even before my dad collaborated with her, I couldn’t believe it. And then she became the queen we know today.”

Love Song:
“‘Una Vida,’ which I composed for my husband, is a favorite. I’m really in love, deeply, I couldn’t be more in love.”

Grandfather’s Memory:
“‘Escalón Por Escalón’ was the first song I learned from my grandfather. I remember the moment my dad took me to sing it to my grandfather. His reaction was incredible, and I’ll always carry it with me.”

Top Cumbia Song:
“I love cumbias. All songs by Margarita Vargas, the goddess of cumbias. I’ve danced to them so much!”

Top Song from the Album ‘Camila Fernández’:
“‘A Seguir La Fiesta’ is the song that defines me the most.”
