FIFA’s Club World Cup Is Getting a Makeover: Here’s What’s New

The FIFA Club World Cup is about to change the game. Literally.

In 2025, FIFA will launch a brand-new version of the tournament: a massive 32-team showdown in the United States that will crown the best club in the world. It’s no longer just a one-week affair. This is a full-scale, month-long international tournament with a format that closely resembles the World Cup we know, but for club teams instead of national squads.

What Is the FIFA Club World Cup?

The Club World Cup is FIFA’s official tournament to determine the best club team in the world. Traditionally, it brought together the champions of each continental federation (Europe, South America, Asia, Africa, North America, and Oceania), along with the league champion of the host country. It started in 2000 and became an annual tournament in 2005.

But 2025 is different. This will be the first edition under a new format that expands the field from 7 to 32 clubs and happens every four years instead of annually. And for the first time ever, it will be held in the United States, from June 15 to July 13.

The Format

The 32 participating clubs are split into eight groups of four. Each team plays three group-stage matches. The top two teams from each group advance to the round of 16. From there, it’s straight knockout: Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals, and the Final. No third-place match. Clubs will play a minimum of three matches (if they exit in the group stage) and a maximum of seven (if they reach the final).

The Stadiums and Host Cities

Matches will be held in 12 stadiums across 11 cities:

  • MetLife Stadium (New Jersey)
  • Mercedes-Benz Stadium (Atlanta)
  • Bank of America Stadium (Charlotte)
  • TQL Stadium (Cincinnati)
  • Rose Bowl Stadium (Los Angeles)

  • GEODIS Park (Nashville)
