Week 16 in the NFL: Airing it out

The National Football League is a passing league and week 16 was a prime example of that. Teams relied on their pass games and pass catchers to help secure victories this past week.

NFL Highlights from Sunday 12/24

Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown had 12 catches for 106 yards and one touchdown against division-rival Minnesota Vikings. The Lions defeated the Vikings 30-24. This performance helped Detroit capture its first division title in 30 years. St. Brown has 302 career receptions in his first three seasons, becoming the fourth player ever to achieve this. Despite his team losing, Minnesota wide receiver Justin Jefferson caught six balls for 142 yards with a touchdown. Jefferson is up to 5,648 career receiving yards, the most by a player in his first four seasons in the NFL.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in the driver’s seat to win the NFC South. They control their fate. A win in week 17 guarantees a playoff berth for Tampa Bay. This season, the offense has been led by quarterback Baker Mayfield and veteran superstar wide receiver Mike Evans. This past weekend, the duo shined as Evans had seven catches for 86 yards and two touchdowns in the Buccaneers’ win over the Jacksonville Jaguars 30-12. Evans is up to 13 touchdowns this season and is the fifth player in NFL history to have at least 12 touchdown receptions in five or more seasons.

The Los Angeles Rams have turned their season around. Winning five out of their last six games, Los Angeles is 8-7 and holds the sixth seed in the NFC standings. Rookie wide receiver Puka Nacua has been a catalyst in head coach Sean McVay’s offense. Nacua has been a number one receiving option all year for L.A., and his week 16 performance was another showing. He has nine catches for 164 yards and one touchdown in the Rams’ 30-22 win against the New Orleans Saints. With 1,327 receiving yards and 96 receptions, Nacua is making a strong case to be the Offensive Rookie of the Year.

The Miami Dolphins have been the number-one-rated offense all year. They rank number one in yards per game (411.5), points per game (30.9), and total points scored this season (463). The man leading the offense is wide receiver Tyreek Hill. The eight-year pro is having one of his best seasons with 106 catches, 1,641 yards, and 12 touchdowns caught. Miami secured its second consecutive postseason berth this past Sunday after they defeated the Dallas Cowboys 22-20.

Wide receiver Amari Cooper had a historical day against the Houston Texans with 11 receptions, 265 yards, and two touchdowns. This performance helped secure Cleveland’s 10th win of the season. The 265 yards from Cooper are a single-game franchise record. It is Cooper’s third game with at least 200 yards and two touchdowns. He is the fourth player in NFL history to do so. It is also the third team Cooper has accomplished this with. The two others were the Oakland Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.
