The sweet taste of success: How a Venezuelan woman’s New York cookies became famous
  • Sugary resilience! Johanna Fernández went from arriving in the U.S. with only $200 to founding “Azúcar Morena,” a pastry benchmark in Maryland.

  • Family sacrifice as the entrepreneur from Zulia held up to three simultaneous jobs with the sole objective of saving to reunite with her daughters.

  • Menu innovation because her “New York cookies” and online training courses have become the engine of a booming business.

Johanna Fernández’s story is a testament to determination that began in Zulia state, Venezuela, where she inherited a passion for baking from her mother. Although she initially saw pastry making as extra income, her commitment led her to professional training as a Chef Patissier in Mérida, paying for her studies by selling her own desserts. However, in 2019, the crisis in her country forced her to emigrate to Maryland, United States, carrying just $200 and an unwavering dream that today bears fruit under the name “Azúcar Morena.”

From multi employment to business recognition

Upon arriving in the United States, Johanna faced a demanding reality that led her to work three different jobs to afford bringing her daughters over, a goal she achieved after two and a half years of hard work. During that time, she dedicated her Sundays, her only day off, to baking and selling through Facebook groups, achieving such rapid acceptance that the demand soon forced her to dedicate herself entirely to her venture. In this way, what began in a home kitchen transformed into a solid company that today leads the way in Latin pastry in the American market.

The “New York Cookies” phenomenon

The true rise to fame for Azúcar Morena came with its New York style cookies, which stand out for their high quality chocolate fillings, pistachio and other premium ingredients. Furthermore, Johanna has successfully diversified her business model by selling online courses and tutorials, allowing other entrepreneurs to learn the techniques that led her to success. Despite seasonal pauses in physical sales, her educational platform maintains the income flow, proving that the combination of artisanal talent and strategic vision is the perfect recipe for succeeding abroad.
