The Last of Us Season 2 Is Back and the Latino Representation Is Strong

We’re heading back to the apocalypse! The Last of Us is finally returning to HBO and Max, and let me tell you, the hype is real. Season 1 had us on a rollercoaster of emotions, and now Season 2 promises to hit even harder. With a shorter run, just seven episodes instead of nine, but a bigger cast, fresh storylines, and drama galore, this season’s set to flip the script. And, of course, Pedro Pascal’s here to remind us why we couldn’t get enough of this show from the get-go.
Let’s catch up on who’s coming back, joining the team, and what surprises are in store.

Familiar Faces Returning on Season 2
Our forever internet daddy, Pedro Pascal, is back as Joel, and he’s still tackling the heavy emotions from that hospital scene in the Season 1 finale. If you remember, Joel went full Rambo on the Fireflies to save Ellie, even though it might have cost humanity its shot at a cure. He lied to Ellie about it, saying the Fireflies couldn’t do anything, and now, five years later, that lie is just sitting there, heavy, uncomfortable, and waiting to explode.

Joel is now living in Jackson, Wyoming, trying to perform the dad role while wrestling with a mountain of guilt. And his relationship with Ellie? Let’s just say… it’s complicated.
Bella Ramsey is back as Ellie, who’s now 19 and living in Jackson. But Ellie isn’t the same kid we met in Season 1. She’s stronger, angrier, and definitely still hung up on what went down at the hospital. And the tension between her and Joel? You bet it’s gonna be a central part of this season.
Also in Jackson with Ellie? Dina, played by Isabela Merced. Dina is Ellie’s best friend and future love interest, and she brings some much-needed balance to Ellie’s chaos. Their relationship is going to be a major storyline this season, and it heats up quickly.

Gabriel Luna returns as Tommy, Joel’s brother, and honestly, he’s the only one who can really call Joel out. He’s still living in Jackson with his wife, Maria (played again by Rutina Wesley). Together, they’re pretty much the backbone of this survivor town.
We might also get more glimpses of Tess (Anna Torv) and Marlene (Merle Dandridge) in flashbacks. Sure, they’re technically gone, but this show loves a trip down memory lane, so don’t be surprised if they make a cameo.

The New Kids in the Apocalypse
Now, let’s talk about the fresh faces coming to The Last of Us.
Kaitlyn Dever as Abby: She’s the character everyone’s going to be talking about. Abby is a soldier out for revenge, and she’s a key player in the story from Part II of the video game. Without giving away too much: she’s intense, complex, and ready to turn the show on its head. Kaitlyn was even almost cast as Ellie back when they were planning a movie version of the story, so it’s a full circle energy.

Abby isn’t flying solo, she’s got a team, and they’re making a strong entrance:
- Danny Ramirez steps in as Manny, her loyal ride-or-die.
- Tati Gabrielle takes on the role of Nora, a military medic with a tricky past.
- Ariela Barer plays Mel, another doctor caught in the crossfire of war and survival.
- Spencer Lord is Owen, one of Abby’s closest allies, facing some major choices.
Isabela Merced as Dina: She’s Ellie’s closest friend and more. Dina is funny, loyal, and tough, and her bond with Ellie will be one of the emotional cores of the season. How does their story unfold? Just get ready.

Young Mazino as Jesse: Jesse leads the patrols in Jackson and happens to be Dina’s ex. He’s the kind of guy who always puts others first, even when it’s tough on him. He’s really close with Ellie, making him a major player in this season’s storyline.

Jeffrey Wright as Isaac: Isaac is at the helm of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF), one of the main groups you’ll dive into this season. He’s an ex-Marine, straight-up serious, no-nonsense.
Each of these characters has their own baggage and backstories, and they’ll all bring new energy to the show. And as a surprise bonus? Catherine O’Hara is guest-starring as Joel’s therapist in Jackson. No, we didn’t make that up. Moira Rose in the apocalypse? We’re in.
What Can We Expect From Season 2?
Season 2 picks up five years after the end of Season 1. Joel and Ellie are in Jackson. But their past choices are catching up fast. Trust is breaking, new enemies are showing up, and the world outside is even more dangerous than before.
Creators Craig Mazin (Chernobyl) and Neil Druckmann (also the creator of the original game) have confirmed that Season 2 closely follows The Last of Us Part II, so if you played it, you know what’s coming… and if you didn’t, just know: nothing will be the same.
Pedro Pascal is back. Bella Ramsey is back. They’re back and louder than ever. The Last of Us Season 2 is set to pull us even deeper into the heartbreak, the violence, and the sheer humanity in this post-apocalyptic world. Tune in starting April 13 on HBO and Max.
