“The Fire Inside” Premiere Shines a light on Claressa Shields’ Inspiring Journey

The energy was electric just like fight night, at the premiere of The Fire Inside, the highly anticipated biopic about the life and rise of 2x Olympic boxing champion Claressa Shields. The film Stars Brian Tyree Henry and Ryan Destiny, the film shines a spotlight on the impeccable resilience and determination of Shields who grew up in Flint, Michigan, and showcases her life and challenges both in and out of the ring.

Speaking on the red carpet, Brian Tyree Henry, who portrays Shields’ coach Jason Crutchfield, shared a candid reflection about the significance of this story. “I had to sit back and ask myself, how did I not know this story?” Henry said. He emphasized the importance of honoring Shields and her journey, adding,

“It’s still not enough for me, but to tell this story and shine a light, it’s something to show them how much we appreciate them.”

Claressa Shields herself attended the event and opened up about her initial doubts about Ryan Destiny playing her. “In the beginning, I was like, she’s so nice—how is she gonna play me?” Shields said with a laugh. However, after a FaceTime conversation with Destiny, Shields was completely won over, offering her full support and trust.

Destiny, who delivers a transformative performance from what fans are accustomed to seeing from her really immersed herself in the role and became the boxing icon. She shared her perspective on the role and the beginning stages of the journey. “Going into the audition, I was in the mindset that I wouldn’t get it, and that actually helped,” Destiny revealed. She also spoke about her connection with Shields, saying, “She’s like a friend from high school.”

Barry Jenkins, the Academy Award-winning writer and producer of the film, spoke about what drew him to Shields’ story. “Claressa Shields was an everyday person fighting for something, and that’s why I was so excited to tell this story,” Jenkins explained. He also praised Destiny’s commitment to the role, saying her transformation was nothing short of extraordinary.

Director of the film Rachel Morrison talked about what inspired her to take on the project. “Claressa’s story of being incredibly resilient inside the ring but also outside the ring was what inspired me to make this movie,” Morrison shared.

Speaking of resilience, we asked Shields where her resilience and determination come from and for Shields, faith played a major role in all of this. The boxer attributed much of her perseverance to scripture Jeremiah 29:11, which she leaned on during her toughest moments.

With a December 25th release date, The Fire Inside promises to be more than just an inspirational sports movie, it’s a celebration of Shields’ tough spirit and the people who supported her along the way.
