The Aztec Video Game We’ve Always Wanted is Here

Aztech Forgotten Gods is an upcoming video game by Lienzo, a studio based in Chihuahua, Mexico that promises to bring some much-needed Latino representation to gaming beyond just having a Miles Morales an Afro-Latino Spiderman. The game explores an alternate timeline where the Aztech empire prevailed and became a technologically advanced civilization. The game follows Achtli, a young girl who wanders the futuristic Azetech Holy City of Tenochtitlan. One day Achtli goes on an archeological dig and accidentally awakens ancient, forgotten Gods who set out to destroy her city. After the incident, Achtli finds out that she has also been granted an ancient power that allows her to stand up to the Gods.
It’s really cool to see different mythologies being explored in the video game industry. Franchises like Assassin’s Creed and God of War show that there is a market for different mythologies being explored in video games.
Lienzo has already made one video game that explores the Tarahumara culture from Mexico in Mulaka and received mostly positive reviews. It was praised for being able to implement accurate cultural source material without sacrificing the gameplay. The Aztec mythology is one that has not been explored in this industry. Aztech Forgotten Gods is a very promising and exciting way to add some mainstream exposure to Latino culture. It’s especially exciting that the game is being produced by a studio that is based in Mexico so the outcome is more authentic. The game is slated to come out fall of 2021 and will be released on all major consoles including the new Sony PS 5.
