Taylor Swift Fans Take Advantage of Argentina’s inflation to See Show for Less

Taylor Swift’s first Latin American tour has sparked excitement among thousands of teenagers while causing a financial headache for their parents. However, a surprising trend has emerged as American Swifties have discovered that it may be cheaper to buy tickets and arrange travel to see Taylor in Argentina than to purchase resale tickets for her concert in Chicago.

The staggering economic crisis in Argentina, marked by a skyrocketing inflation rate, devaluation of the peso, and a thriving black market for the dollar, has given rise to this unexpected scenario.

For years, Argentines have grown accustomed to sold-out shows and exorbitant ticket prices. Yet, due to the favorable exchange rates between the American dollar and the Argentine peso, attending a Taylor Swift concert in Argentina has become an unexpected bargain for foreigners.

The 33-year-old pop sensation embarked on her North American tour in March, and the remaining tickets for her shows have been selling for thousands of dollars – up to $1,500. In contrast, the most expensive ticket for her concerts in Argentina, plus a plane ticket to Buenos Aires, can be acquired for less than $1,200.

The cost of a plane ticket can range from $800 to $1,100, depending on the airline. Official ticket prices range from 18,000 to 85,000 Argentine pesos – without service charge –  which roughly converts to $72 to $340 at the official exchange rate set by the Central Bank of 248 pesos.

However, for the average citizen, the official rate is nothing but a fairy tale. In an economy plagued by an inflation rate of over 100% per year, acquiring dollars is a challenge in itself and often involves navigating the black market, where the exchange rate is more than double the official rate. As of this week, the price for one US dollar on the black market stands at 487 pesos.

At the black market rate, the most expensive ticket for any one of Taylor Swift’s concerts in Argentina costs approximately $175, effectively halving the official price. That is roughly the equivalent of an entire month’s minimum wage.

Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour in Latin America

Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour is a global tour that celebrates her entire career, from her early country hits to her more recent pop anthems. The show is also visually stunning, with elaborate sets and costumes.

The tour, which has already played to sold-out crowds in the United States and Europe, is now headed to Latin America, with new dates in Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil. The artist will perform on August 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th in Mexico City, at the Foro Sol.

Two months later, Taylor will head south and play sold-out dates in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on November 9th, 10th, and 11th at River Plate Stadium, where Coldplay recently performed 10 shows in a row.

The Latin American tour will come to an end in Brazil, performing on November 18th and 19th in Rio de Janeiro, and November 25th, 26th, and 27th in Sao Paulo. Sabrina Carpenter will be the opening act for all of the shows in Latin America.
