First quarter
Zero points were scored in the first quarter of regulation. Setting the tone of the game. What did occur was a preview of what was to come for the rest of the game. During the first drive of the game, San Francisco was at the Kansas City 29 when running back Christian McCaffrey was hit by linebacker Leo Chenal causing McCaffrey to fumble and Kansas City to recover the ball. Luckily for the 49ers, this would not be costly as the Chiefs went three and out on the very next drive. Three combined punts from both teams were all the fans saw in the first. The game remained tied 0-0.
Second quarter
A 10-play 46-yard drive that started in the first quarter ended with a 55-yard field goal from rookie Jake Moody. Marking a 3-0 lead and the longest field goal in NFL history at the time. Kansas City got the ball back and finally found its groove. They marched down to San Francisco’s red zone on the brink of scoring. When defensive back Deommodore Lenoir jarred out the ball from Isiah Pacheco causing the running back to fumble the ball and San Francisco recovering. Kansas City like San Francisco earlier in the game stopped the momentum as they forced the 49ers to punt on three plays. It took trickery for the first touchdown to occur. When wide receiver Jauan Jennings threw the ball across the field into the hands of McCaffrey the running back took it up the field for a 21-yard touchdown. With a 10-0 score and four minutes left before halftime quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his offense needed a response. 13 plays, 65 yards, and a 4:03 drive was the response, capped off by a Harrison Butker 28-yard field goal. Leaving the Halftime score 10-3 San Francisco lead.
Third quarter
The turnover bug followed into the second half. Safety Ji’Ayir Brown picked off Mahomes during the first drive in the third quarter. Once again, the offense wasn’t able to capitalize off of the turnover as San Francisco punted on the very next drive. After punts from both teams, we saw more points from the leg of Butker when he booted a 57-yard field. Making it the longest field goal in Super Bowl history. A special teams fumble from the 49ers provided great field position for Kansas City. A 16-yard strike from Mahomes to Marquez Valdes-Scantling gave the Chiefs its first lead of the game 13-10
Fourth quarter
San Francisco was not phased. They had their best drive of the day following the touchdown. They drove 75 yards and scored once again when Jennings caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Brock Purdy. Making Jennings the second player in Super Bowl history to catch and pass for a touchdown. The missed extra point only gave San Francisco a three-point lead 16-13. The next three drives ended with fields. Kansas City quickly tied the game after a Butker 24-yarder. The back and forth wouldn’t need San Francisco’s rookie Moody nailed a 53-yard kick giving the Niners a 19-16 lead. The ball was in the hands of Mahomes. He drove his team down to the 11-yard line of San Francisco. A pass attempt to superstar Travis Kelce was broken up by Latino superstar Fred Warner. Forcing Kansas City to kick a field and send the game into overtime. 19-19
