Student Creates Masks for Hearing Impaired

With new government recommendations suggesting people cover their face in public, everyone that didn’t have a mask is now looking to get one. However, the more people that are covering their faces, the harder it is for hearing impaired people who rely on lip-reading and facial expressions for American Sign Language.

That’s where Eastern Kentucky University student Ashley Lawrence has stepped in. She’s been making her own masks with a plastic window, making lip-reading possible while staying safe and protected.

Lawrence makes these modified masks while she’s home from school and sends them out for free to people who need them. According to her GoFundMe page, she will be releasing a video on how to make your very own see-through mask. In the meantime, here is a video from Chinese interpreters on how to make a mask.
