Storytellers: LGBTQ+ Figures in the Performing Arts

The performing arts contain a plethora of diverse talented LGBTQ+ individuals who have made significant contributions to dance, music, and acting. Their stories highlight the importance of representation and the power of art to break barriers. Here are five influential LGBTQ+ Latino figures in the performing arts.

Rudy Garcia

Rudy Garcia, hailing from Miami, is a multifaceted choreographer, performer, and professional dancer. Trained in a wide range of dance styles including Ballet, Modern, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Jazz Funk and Afro-Caribbean. Rudy has showcased his versatility across various platforms. He has appeared in television series like Premios, La Voz Kids, La Banda, Mira Quien Baila, and most recently, Netflix’s hit Dance 100. Rudy’s impressive career includes performances with some well-known artists like Joe Jonas, Liam Payne, J Balvin, Ally Brooke of Fifth Harmony, Daddy Yankee, Maluma, and Todrick Hall. His dynamic presence and dedication to his craft have made him a standout figure in the dance community.

Christian Chavez

Christian Chavez, a former member of the pop group RBD, has navigated a challenging yet inspiring journey. After being outed in 2007, Christian faced deep depression that led to a suicide attempt. At the time, he was at the height of his career, starring in the popular Mexican telenovela Rebelde and performing with RBD. Despite these challenges, Chavez has taken control of his life and continues to thrive as a Mexican singer, songwriter, and advocate for mental health. Christian’s resilience and talent have solidified his place in Latin music and television.

Vanessa Zamora

Vanessa Zamora, a singer-songwriter from Tijuana, Mexico, is known for her unique blend of indie pop and folk music. Over the past two years, Vanessa has continued to innovate and expand her musical persona. In 2022, she released the single “Psilocibina,” which received positive reviews for its psychedelic sound and introspective lyrics. She also embarked on a successful tour across Mexico and Latin America. Vanessa’s music is a journey through less explored pop territories, guided by eclectic, psychedelic, and 70’s influences. Her work stands out for its timeless quality and her ability to create songs that listeners resonate with on a personal level.

Michaela Jaé  Rodriguez

Michaela Jaé Rodriguez made history as the first Trans woman to win a Golden Globe Award for her groundbreaking performance in Pose. She is also known for her role as Angel in the 2011 Off-Broadway revival of Rent, which won her the 2011 Clive Barnes Award. Mj has starred in productions such as Little Shop of Horrors, Street Children,  and Runaways Her journey began at Queen of Angels Catholic School, and she pursued acting from a young age, eventually attending the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and graduating from Newark Arts High School. Rodriguez’s talent and perseverance have made her a trailblazer in the industry. Now she stars in the Apple TV+ series “Loot” along side comedic icon Maya Rudolph.

Max Pelayo

Max Pelayo, originally from Austin, Texas, is a rising star in the acting world. He gained prominence for his role as Aristotle Mendoza in the movie adaptation of Benjamin Alire Sáenz’s novel, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. In this film, he worked alongside renowned actors Eugenio Derbez, Veronica Falcón, Eva Longoria, and Kevin Alejandro. Max is also set to star as Jaime DeLuna in the film Marisol. A dedicated student at the Carol Hickey Acting Studio, he is really focused on his craft at a young age. Max’s burgeoning career and his commitment to his craft make him a promising figure in the LGBTQ+ performing arts community.

These Latino performers showcase the amazing talent within the LGBTQ+ community. Their contributions to the performing arts not only are indicative of their hard work but also their dedication to inspiring other LGBTQ+ individuals with their success.
