TV Producer Stan Zimmerman on How Media Representation has Changed Over the Years

On The Q Agenda, Behind The Scenes conversations, TV producer, director and screenwriter, Stan Zimmerman speaks on how on-screen and off-screen controversies are now compared to what they were in the past.

An example of this was when Disney announced “The Little Mermaid” would have actress Halle Bailey portray the role of Ariel. “The idea that so many girls were going to be watching this that they would suddenly see themselves in this role — It’s fantastic. I think that’s what’s so great about teather, you can have so many different types of people play different roles.”

When it comes to some backlash a few Hollywood productions get when representing people of color or members of the LGBTQ community, Zimmerman says there’s a lot of work to do. He has a way of seeing things through a rose-colored glasses view, based on a memory from his childhood.

Have we made enough progress?

“Never enough, and we don’t have enough voices. One day, maybe, it will be the best actor who gets the role. There has been low representation. Many years, no representation. We have many years to make up for that,” says Stan.
