The Difference Between Sexual Identity and Sexual Orientation

The Difference Between Sexual Identity and Sexual Orientation

Many people tend to confuse identity and sexual orientation when referring to those who belong in the LGBTQ+ community. To help clear up misunderstandings, we’re breaking down an in-depth discussion on the topic, specifically in regards to trans and non-binary people.

Sexual orientation includes lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, pansexual, heterosexual (often referred to as straight), and many other labels. Some people choose not to use labels. Today, queer is used as an umbrella term for anyone who isn’t heterosexual. The word has been reclaimed as in the past it was used as a slur against LGBTQ+ community members.

Sexual identity and sexual orientation aren’t terms that can be used interchangeably. Sexual identity is your sense of self in relation to your sexuality and often includes gender identity and sexual orientation. Part of sexual identity is sexual orientation which refers to whom you’re attracted to sexually and romantically. We may use sexual orientation to describe our sexual identity by referring to ourselves with the label that correctly defines with whom we seek to have sexual, emotional, and/or romantic relationships. Someone unsure about their sexual identity may use the term ‘questioning’ to describe their sexual orientation.

The language used to label sexual orientations is always evolving to be more inclusive. Usage of sexual orientation terms varies as well. Gay was used for anyone attracted to people of the same gender but is now more commonly used to describe homosexual men.

Gender identity is also part of sexual identity and isn’t the same as sexual orientation. Gender identity refers to the gender a person feels they are and it’s not related to their reproductive organs or appearance. You can’t assume someone’s gender by looking at them. Common gender identities include transgender, genderqueer, nonbinary, and cisgender.

To help clear up misunderstandings, hosts Lianna Carrera and Carolina Gutierrez in-depth discussion on the topic, specifically in regards to trans and non-binary people.
