Selena Gomez Opens Up About Her Spanish Language Album

Selena Gomez stunned on the cover of Vogue for their April 2021 Issue.

The singer and actress was photographed in her backyard in Los Angeles by Nadine Ijewere, who became the first African American woman to shoot a cover for American Vogue. Selena Gomez’s first Spanish EP, “Revelación” produced by Tainy, was released today.  She surprised her fans in the beginning of the year with the release of her single ‘soy mas fuerte sola’ anthem, “De Una Vez,” and she later released “Baila Conmigo” featuring Rauw Alejandro. Last week she released a “Selfish Love” music video in collaboration with DJ Snake. Gomez has been wanting to work on a Spanish language album for years. The music video from her first single, “De Una Vez,” has stunning creative visuals and catchy lyrics about healing after heartbreak, which racked her up more than 65 million views.

Gomez was born in the town of Grande Prairie, Texas. She was named after Selena Quintanilla because her parents were fans of the Tejano female star. In a rare video, Gomez speaks to Abraham Quintanilla on the phone during a recording session to do a cover of, “Bidi Bidi Bom Bom.” In 2014, in her album “For You” Gomez also released a cover of the song with Selena Quintanilla’s vocals in the background.

During the Vogue interview, Gomez shared she was taking Spanish lessons and vocal lessons before going to each recording session for her Spanish album “Revelación.” She shared, “The project is really an homage to my heritage.” She believes it’s easier for her to sing in Spanish than to actually speak the language.

Gomez also opened up during the interview about how she has felt while releasing music, people were not taking her seriously as an artist. She’s extremely thankful for the people who have supported her music throughout the years.

“I think next time I do an album it’ll be different. I want to give it one last try before I maybe retire [from] music.”

When Gomez was asked about the question again, she rephrased her answer. She would like to focus on spending more time producing and in her own words she said, “give myself a real shot at acting.” Throughout the years, she has also helped produce a few series and has appeared on TV shows such as Disney channel’s “Wizards of Waverly Place” as well as a few movies.  One of the projects she launched last year was the “Selena + Chef” cooking show on HBO Max.

Gomez’s father’s side of the family is Mexican; during the interview she spoke about her paternal grandparents living undocumented in the United States for seventeen years. As she became more informed about what it was like to be undocumented, she wanted to contribute to helping the undocumented community.

In 2019, Gomez became an executive producer in the Netflix series Living Undocumented. Gomez shared, “My goal was to communicate that these people are not ‘aliens’; they’re not whatever names other people have given them. They’re humans, they’re people.”

Since Gomez was a young girl, she has been in the spotlight since making her first appearance on Barney and Friends. She is proud of being Latina and where she comes from. At the age of 28, she continues to use her platform to bring awareness to hot button topics and use her voice to start important conversations. Gomez reminds us that no matter how many followers she has on social media, she is also a human being who goes through ups and downs and has stories to share about her trials and tribulations.
