Why is Selena Day celebrated on April 16?
Selena Quintanilla was born on April 16, 1971 in the United States, although her roots are Mexican, she cultivated the ‘Tex-Mex’, the ranchera, ballad, Latin pop and Mexican cumbia since she began at the age of 9.
Every April 16 her anniversary is celebrated and numerous tributes are prepared in her honor. One of the best known is ‘Selena Day,’ a date in which honor is paid to one of the singers who has marked a point and a part in the world of music.
On October 17, 1989, an 18-year-old teenager of Mexican origin released her first solo album for sale, a milestone in music in general. However, no one could imagine that her life would end in such a tragic way only a few years after she launched her solo Career.
Selena is not only honored on April 16th, La Reina continues to be remembered through podcasts devoted to her, like “Anything for Selena.” Also, 25 years after the movie made about her, Selena, was released, it came back to theaters around the U.S. for a special screening one weekend only.
