Lianna Carrera Shares Same Sex Couple Parenting Tips | The Q Agenda

On a recent The Q Agenda segment, Lianna Carrera discussed her experience with Same Sex couple parenting. She’s always known she wanted to have kids but, as a queer person, she also knew her path to parenthood wouldn’t be traditional. “It’s not always blood that’s family,” she says.
Carrera’s partner, Kim, has two children from a previous relationship. Kim says Carrera is incredible for opening up her heart to the kids.
Since Kim and her ex have shared custody and are co-parenting, Carrera’s role is the “fun uncle” since she doesn’t have to be the enforcer. “I use humor when I parent, and I’m having the experience of being a parent. I’m not on the sidelines,” she says.
Both Kim and Carrera know sign language so they use that to communicate when they’re making decisions that involve the children.
“I wasn’t trying to be territorial of them. We have rules in the house for two reasons—one is so you don’t kill yourself and the second one is so [the kids] grow up to be cool humans. I approach them with nothing but love.”
Carrera advises lesbians who want to become parents to simply go for it. “There’s not ever going to be a convenient time. Straight people don’t usually plan [to have children]. That’s what’s special about being a gay parent, our children are wanted a lot of the time, we can’t have them by accident. Don’t rush into it. Don’t take it lightly. Start saving for [their] college.”
The Q Agenda has curated exclusive digital content to further broaden and amplify LGBTQ voices. In this segment, Enrique Sapene sits down with Lianna Carrera to talk about same-sex parenting and how Lianna navigates her experience within her own family.
