PBS Vows to Showcase Latinx Film Talent – New Shorts to Watch!

If you’re looking for great stories to watch this weekend, look no further than the new released films by THE LATINO EXPERIENCE on PBS, a new three-part anthology series of short fiction and nonfiction films, including Cuban American Gothic, The Daily War and Luciela, which aired in PBS’ Short Film Festival for 2021.
Besides the films we shared last week, here are a few more to follow.
Cuban American Gothic is the comic and slightly surreal story of Maggie (Maggie Diaz Bofill), who is living alone in New York City during the early 2020 pandemic. When her Cuban parents return from the dead to help, they remind her of their immigrant journey and that they have given her everything she needs to rise above the moment. Inspired by an original monologue by Bofill, the film is produced and directed by María Teresa Rodríguez and co-produced by Bofill. “Cuban American Gothic” is a co-production of Pata de Perro Productions and Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB). Luciela is an incredibly moving short film about a young girl who gets reminded how her family has been torn apart on her favorite holiday. The film, directed by Erin Ploss-Campoamor, is a co-production of Mare’s Hoof Production and Latino Public Broadcasting (LPB). The short tells the story of a fiercely independent Mexican-American girl who loves the 4th of July because every year her Papi throws a huge party. He does one of the best firework shows in Lincoln Heights —their immigrant neighborhood in Los Angeles which delights all. But this year he can’t, because he’s been deported. So Luciela decides to set off a few sparks of her own. PRESS HERE to watch Luciela.
As part of PBS SoCal’s commitment to support and present diverse content created by a broad array of storytellers, The Latino Experience presents a compilation of shorts showcasing the wide-ranging talent and complexity within the Latino community. From dramas to documentaries, comedies to magical realism, the narrative and scripted shorts showcase an exciting lineup of creative talent, both in front of and behind the camera.
Stay tuned for upcoming releases!
