Olivia Rodrigo’s ‘Driver’s License’ – #1 on Billboard Charts for 7 Weeks Straight

Filipino-American actress and singer Olivia Rodrigo’s hit single “Driver’s License” has now been the most popular song in the country for 7 weeks in a row, according to Billboard’s Hot 100 list. The popularity of “Driver’s License” can be attributed to the perfect storm of real-life teenage drama, excellent PR, and a truly fantastic song.
For those who don’t know, it has been widely speculated that Rodrigo’s song is about the unconfirmed romance and unconfirmed breakup between her and High School Musical: The Series co-star, Joshua Bassett. Apparently, Bassett had broken Rodrigo’s heart and subsequently begun dating Disney starlet Sabrina Carpenter. There are multiple clues in the song that Rodrigo is referring to the romance, including the mention of an “older blonde girl.”
Following the release, both Carpenter and Bassett came out with their own singles, “Skin” and “Lie Lie Lie,” respectively, in response to Rodrigo’s Billboard chart topper. When asked if she would “ever do a response song to the response song,” Rodrigo pretty much said no, explaining that she doesn’t know Carpenter and has only met her in passing.
“I actually don’t know her at all,” she said, of Carpenter. “I think we’ve met once or twice in passing, but I’ve never had a conversation with her, so I don’t think I could write a song that was meaningful or emotional about somebody that I don’t know.” Sounds like she’s having a Mariah Carey moment.
All this drama has only increased the popularity and relevance of the song, particularly among her Gen Z stans. The truth is, regardless of this whole mess, the song SLAPS. Forget the haters Olivia, keep crushing the music game!
