What’s Coming to Netflix in August?

With August around the corner, Netflix announced its long-awaited list of new arrivals. New movies, series, new seasons, and documentaries are dropping on the platform. LATV has put together a compilation of some of these productions to add to next month’s must-watch list.

Heartstopper (Season 2) – August 3rd

The highly anticipated second season of the British teen LGBTQ+ romance series is finally coming to Netflix. The show is an adaptation of the comics by Alice Oseman, who wrote all the episodes of the first season and the same is expected to happen in the second.

The first season ended with Nick and Charlie happy having started a relationship together, but even more striking than that was the fact that Nick was encouraged to confess to his mother that he is bisexual and that Charlie is his boyfriend and not his best friend, such and as he had been led to believe until then.

In case the series continues to stay as faithful to the original comics, we should see a trip to Paris where something very important should happen or Charlie go to a clinic to cure his obsessive compulsive disorder.

Down for Love – August 11th

Down for Love is a dating show hailing from New Zealand, but with a twist. We follow ten people with Down syndrome as they search for love. Everyone wants companionship and affection, to love and be loved in return. People with Down syndrome are no different, and they deserve the same chance at happiness as everyone else.

At its core, this show is about diversity and love. Our search for love is universal, no matter who we are. Over the course of five episodes, the singles go on a series of dates, some of them for the first time. They also get advice from family, friends, experts, and other couples. As they take tentative steps toward love, their honesty and openness could teach us all a thing or two.

Heart of Stone – August 11th

Gal Gadot headlines this new spy thriller about an intelligence operative and international spy named Sarah, a brave and cunning woman who finds herself on a dangerous mission facing powerful enemies and dark secrets that threaten the stability of the world.

The Chosen One – August 16th

One of the comic adaptations to live action series that Netflix will release this year is The Chosen One. This is based on the three-part comic by Mark Millar called American Jesus. Ragnarok (Season 3) – August 23rd

Season 3 is the third and final season of the Norwegian coming-of-age superhero series Ragnarok, which will bow out after being on our screens for three years. The successful Norwegian series told the story of a teenager who comes to a town to live with his family to lead a quiet life. But everything changes when he begins to experience strange events, memories of another life, and supernatural powers like those of the god of thunder.

However, it is not just a mythological story. Through the classic characters, the fight against pollution and the big corporations that destroy the planet are shown. Hence the Jotul, the enemies of Thor, are the ones in charge of the great factory of the town that is polluting the water and the land.

For the final season, we can expect Laurits to be one of the great protagonists, or at least that is what his character undoubtedly deserves. If we remember the end of 2021, Magne’s younger brother had also started to experience changes and remember Loki’s life. We will see how he assumes his new role in the war against the Jotul and if he decides to support his brother or ally with the enemy, honoring the god of mischief.

You Are So Not Invited To My Bat Mitzvah – August 25th

One of three major Sandler projects coming to Netflix in 2023 is an adaptation of the book You Are SO Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah! coming from Happy Madison and Alloy Entertainment.

In this coming-of-age comedy, you will see most of the Sandler family in the movie, including Adam Sandler himself and Jackie Sandler. Adam will play Danny Friedman, while Jackie will play the role of Gabi Rodriguez Katz. Their daughters, Sunny and Sadie Sandler will also star, both of whom are featured in Netflix’s Hubie Halloween. They will play Stacy and Ronnie Friedman, respectively.

The synopsis for the original book reads: “Stacy Friedman is getting ready for one of the most important events of her young life––her bat mitzvah!  All she wants is the perfect BCBG dress to wear, her friends by her side, and her biggest crush ever, Andy Goldfarb, to dance with her (and maybe even make out with her on the dance floor).  But Stacy’s well-laid plans soon start to fall apart….Her stressed-out mother forces her to buy a hideous sequined dress that makes her look like the bride of Frankenstein.  Her mitzvahs are not going well at all.  And then the worst thing in the entire world happens––causing Stacy to utter the words that will wreak complete havoc on her social life …You are SO not invited to my bat mitzvah!”

Choose Love – August 31st

Interactive content has slowly been finding its feet on Netflix and further its ambitions in the space, Netflix has been developing Choose Love, an interactive romantic comedy starring Laura Marano. You, the viewer, will make decisions for Cami, Marano’s character, in some tough romantic situations.

The story — or stories — centers on a recording engineer named Cami (Marano), who seemingly has it all and is headed toward a life of bliss with her boyfriend, Paul. But she feels something is missing, and here come the choices and dilemmas.

What if she is actually missing out on an even better career, perhaps the long-abandoned singing career she once dreamed of? What if Paul isn’t the love of her life but rather Rex Galier, the sexy British rock star who walks into her studio and becomes irrepressibly smitten? Or could it be Jack Menna, her first love and “the one that got away,” the idealistic world traveler who returns home and is ready to rekindle their youthful passion? Oh, decisions, decisions.

The feature will offer viewers the ability to decide what journey the main characters take over the course of this love story, making decisions that can create a variety of unique storylines and multiple endings.

One Piece – August 31st

A live-action adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s beloved manga is coming to Netflix. As franchises go, One Piece is one of the most beloved and well-recognized manga series ever. Roger. Years after the death of Gol D. Roger, a young boy by the name of Monkey D. Luffy has dreams of raising his own crew, finding One Piece, and declaring himself as Pirate King.

After eating a devil fruit that grants Luffy the power to make his body like rubber, it gives him enormous strength and agility. When Luffy finally comes of age, he sets sail from Foosha Village in East Blue and sets upon his grand adventure to become the next Pirate King.
