Netflix Sends Karla Sofía Gascón to the Oscars Despite Backlash

Karla Sofía Gascón is at the center of one of this awards season’s most intense controversies. Although the movie has garnered massive recognition with 13 Oscar nominations, Gascón’s path to the Academy Awards hasn’t been easy. After weeks of speculation over whether Netflix would distance itself from her due to backlash over past social media posts, it has now been confirmed that the streaming giant is supporting her attendance at the ceremony.

The controversy ignited when old tweets from Gascón resurfaced, displaying offensive comments about Muslims, George Floyd, and diversity in Hollywood. These tweets, initially posted between 2020 and 2021, spread rapidly online, sparking widespread backlash. Many demanded accountability, prompting Gascón to issue a public apology: “I want to acknowledge the discussion around my past social media posts that have caused hurt. As someone from a marginalized community, I deeply understand this pain and am truly sorry to those I’ve hurt.” Despite this, the criticism persisted, and Gascón ultimately deleted her Twitter account and stepped back from the public eye.

In the weeks that followed, Netflix’s position on her involvement in the Oscars campaign became unclear. She was removed from promotional materials for Emilia Pérez in the English-speaking market, and her presence at key awards season events, including the Critics Choice Awards and the SAG Awards, was notably absent. Even the film’s director, Jacques Audiard, appeared to distance himself, stating that he was no longer in contact with Gascón after her public apology.

In a surprising development, reports have now confirmed that Netflix will cover Gascón’s expenses to attend the Oscars on March 2 at the Dolby Theatre. The news, first reported by The New York Post, indicates that despite previous distancing, the company is ensuring her presence at the ceremony. While details about her participation are still being finalized, there’s increasing curiosity about whether she’ll walk the red carpet, sit with co-stars Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, or partake in interviews on the biggest night of the year.

Throughout the controversy, Gascón has remained firm in her belief that there is a campaign working against her. She claimed in a recent interview that her main competitor in the Best Actress category, Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres, has a social media team actively working to diminish her chances. “If she wins, great. If I win, great. What I don’t like is that there’s a team trying to tear me down to elevate someone else. That doesn’t help anyone,” she stated.

As the Oscars draw near, the debate over Gascón’s nomination is still heated. Some Academy members have noted that the controversy could damage her chances, while others argue that her performance should be evaluated separately from previous mistakes. Meanwhile, Emilia Pérez continues to make history, standing as a major contender in this year’s ceremony. Whether Gascón wins the award or not, her attendance at the Oscars is now confirmed, ensuring that this chapter in awards season continues to be one of the most talked-about moments of the year.
