Monkeys are Being Bred to Pick Coconuts from Trees

While we are waiting on robots to do the heavy lifting jobs no one wants to do, a Thai supplier chose to burden monkeys with that task. Yes, you read that right. Chaokoh’s Thai is accused of forcing monkeys to pick coconuts from trees, CNN reported. Monkey labor is real.

According to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), Chaokoh brand coconut milk is allegedly made with the help of chained-up monkeys who pick around 400 coconuts a day and are then stuffed in cages until their next shift.

Costco and Target will stop selling their coconut milk joining thousands of stores that refuse to profit from those poor monkeys. “PETA exposés have confirmed that Thai coconut producers are exploiting monkeys and lying about it, so there’s no excuse for any grocery store to keep Chaokoh on its shelves.” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a statement.

And while this is a step in the right direction (monkeys should be swinging through the trees happily), when are the big retailers going to stop selling brands that use child labor? Just saying…
