Latina Identity with Mia Maestro and Laura Gimbert | Get It Girl

We’ve got an exciting episode of Get It Girl from LatiNation this week, and you do not want to miss this one! In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’re shining a spotlight on our culture in a fun and meaningful way.

Joining us for this special episode are two incredible women: doula and mompreneur Laura Gimbert, and actress and filmmaker Mia Maestro. These ladies bring so much to the conversation, as they share their personal experiences, passions, and projects that reflect both their careers and their culture.

Laura Gimbert breaks down what being a doula is all about

Laura Gimbert is an inspiring entrepreneur and certified doula whose mission is empowering women—especially moms—to follow their instincts and dreams. Initially, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in digital marketing, but after freelancing and starting her own successful marketing company, she decided to shift her focus to motherhood and women’s empowerment. Laura now helps moms thrive through pregnancy, birth, and beyond, offering guidance and support through her coaching, courses, and doula services.

Laura clarified in depth the role of a doula and the support they offer during different stages of life, not just birth. She shared, “A doula is basically a companion for women in any stage of life… a doula can help you emotionally and support you.”

She pointed out the key distinction between doulas, midwives, and OB-GYNs, explaining, “A midwife and an OB-GYN are both medical professionals… a doula is emotional and educational, so you can have a doula with an OB-GYN or a midwife. The difference is up to you and what you align more with… There is no right or wrong, you can have a doula both ways.”

Grassland through the eyes of Mia Maestro

We also had the chance to sit down with the incredibly talented Mia Maestro. Mia is a renowned Argentine actress and singer who gained international fame with her role in the Oscar-nominated film Tango, Julie Taymor’s acclaimed biopic Frida, Oliver Stone’s Savages opposite Benicio del Toro, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 & 2, and the TV shows Alias, Scandal and White Collar. Besides acting, Mia is also an indie musician and a passionate advocate for prison reform.

Mia gave us a sneak peek into her latest movie, Grassland. The critically acclaimed film touches on important issues like the criminal justice system and racial profiling, and how these problems impact minority communities, especially Latinos.

Mia didn’t hold back when discussing these topics, saying, “New questions about our traditional system and what has happened to all these people that have been in prison because of maybe second-degree marijuana charges. Also, I think racial profiling is really important. If your skin color is black in the United States, you are seven times more likely to get incarcerated. If you are Latino, you are four times more likely to get incarcerated than a white person.”

Her words are backed up by action; Mia is deeply involved in prison reform and volunteers with Healing Dialogue and Action, where she leads meditation sessions for inmates with life sentences. She shared, “Prison reform is a very big part of my life… when I come back to L.A. I have been volunteering… with life-sentence inmates and in juvenile halls. So there is a lot I know about our prison system in the United States, which is not very positive.”

We even caught up with Mia on the red carpet at the premiere of Grassland and asked her what it felt like to have her film shown at LA Live. “I love LA Live. I’ve had so many films premiered here… tonight we’re closing the festival with Grassland, so we’re really proud,” she said. When asked which actor or actress she’d love to work with next, Mia laughed and said, “Probably a dear friend of mine, so I get to spend some time with him. It’s always fun to make new friends as well.”

Make sure to tune in to this special Hispanic Heritage Month episode! You won’t want to miss it!
