Recap of the Most Memorable Latin Moments of 2021

The year 2021 is coming to an end and this has certainly been quite an intense year; but Covid aside, 2021 it’s been a year full of memorable events in the Latino community. Let’s check the highlights:

  • For all the fans of soccer, the era of Lionel Messi at FC Barcelona came to an end this past August when the Argentinian soccer star left Spain for its neighbor country, France, ending a 21-year relationship with Barcelona (some are still mourning that).

  • Bad Bunny continues to be the most-listened artist on Spotify with more than 381 million users. The boom that Latin music has enjoyed thanks to reggaetón is a hard one to beat.

In terms of movies, three Latino musicals premiered in the middle of the pandemic,  ‘West Side Story‘, ‘In The Heights’ and the animation Disney movie, ‘Encanto‘ with amazing reviews and not so amazing box office which given the circumstances is understandable.

A legend in the regional Mexicano has sadly left us, Vicente Fernandez, at the age of 81.

  • Latino civil rights organization and many others drop ‘Latinx’ from official communication. Apparently is being replaced by Latine or Latin. Latine is latest gender-neutral term used mainly by Spanish-speaking, Latin American cultures. Does this mean it’s time to replace Latinx?
