Meet One of the Best Muralists in LA, Barbaro Carrasco

On November 17th 2022, Barbara Carrasco will be receiving the Chairman’s Award at the Latino Leaders Network event, and certainly, she deserves it.
Barbara Carrasco was one of the pioneers as a Chicana muralist and artist in Los Angeles. Her work critiques stereotypes involving socioeconomic, race, gender, and sexuality, and her art has traveled both nationally and internationally.
Right now you can find some of her most popular work at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM). Pregnant Woman in a Ball of Yarn, Antonia, Self-Portrait, Negativity Attracts, Message to the Public; Pesticides! and today, her work would be recognize at the Latino Leaders Network.
We got to talk to her and when asked about the inspiration behind Pregnant Woman in a Ball of Yarn she told us it happened after a conversation with her brother when he told her that his wife could not study because she needed to raise his children.
“I didn’t realize my brother was that chauvinist. That night I did that drawing in a zinc plate and made copies the next day. And it’s been everywhere since. It was mostly talking about the constraints women feel in the role of mothers,” she said.
Carrasco has been one of the most outspoken women in her generation about farmer’s rights and women’s rights and we’re excited she gets the recognition today. Stay tuned for the rest of the interview with her.
