Living Underwater in Panama: Could SeaPods Be the Future of Sustainable Living?

Never, in my wildest dreams did I think I’d ever see a functioning civilization under the sea, outside of Avatar. Yet now, thanks to aerospace engineer Rüdiger Koch, this might soon become a reality. Koch aims to break a Guinness World Record by living over 120 days in a SeaPod, a revolutionary underwater residence that takes sustainable marine technology to the next level.
This immersive habitat, situated 36 feet underwater, is a live demonstration of what’s possible when innovation meets environmental stewardship.
With 360° views of vibrant marine life, low-impact EMF-safe technology, and a design that respects the delicate balance of ocean ecosystems, the SeaPod showcases a futuristic, eco-conscious way of life. Before embarking on this new adventure, we had the chance to talk with him about it.
What made you create Ocean Builders?
Ocean Builders was born out of a deep passion for living on the water and a desire to reimagine sustainable living. The inspiration came from our founder, Grant Romundt, who spent three and a half years living in a floating home in Toronto, Canada. This unique lifestyle allowed him to experience the peace and connection with nature that comes from living on the water. Inspired by those experiences and the excitement of visitors to his floating home, he envisioned creating spaces that combine innovative technology with the opportunity to connect deeply with the ocean.
Why did you do this in Panama?
Panama was selected for its strategic location outside the hurricane belt, providing astable, consistent climate ideal for deploying SeaPods. Its stunning tropical landscapes
and rich marine biodiversity complement our mission of blending innovation with nature.
Additionally, Panama’s location enables us to focus on perfecting our technology in an
environment free from extreme weather challenges, making it an excellent hub for
pioneering sustainable ocean living.
Why is it sustainable? Or how environmentally friendly are the SeaPods?
SeaPods are designed to minimize environmental impact while enhancing marine
ecosystems. They operate off-grid using renewable energy sources like solar panels and
rainwater harvesting systems. The structure itself promotes eco-restoration by attracting
marine life and encouraging coral growth through a proprietary low-voltage electrical
system. By eliminating the need for land-based construction, SeaPods help preserve
natural habitats and significantly reduce the environmental footprint.
How do you handle typical chores (like grocery shopping, vacuuming, etc…)
underwater?
Everyday tasks, such as grocery shopping, are managed through delivery systems from
land, ensuring convenience for those living in the SeaPods. We get deliveries from
Amazon and virtually any US online shopping website which normally arrive within 4-5
days. Additionally, you can hire cleaning, laundry, and maintenance services to assist
you in virtually any task you wish.
What are the challenges you have experienced?
The journey to create the SeaPod has been filled with unique challenges, from designing
stable structures to integrating sustainable, off-grid technologies. Building public
understanding and acceptance of this revolutionary lifestyle has also been an essential
part of the process. These challenges have driven innovation and allowed us to refine our
designs, setting a new benchmark for ocean-based living.
How deep ‘underwater’ are the SeaPods?
The underwater living section of the SeaPod extends approximately 11 meters below the
surface, providing residents with an immersive marine experience. The full structure
extends a minimum of 26 meters below the surface. This depth strikes a balance
between offering unparalleled views of underwater life and ensuring structural safety and
comfort.
Are you envisioning an under-the-sea city anytime soon?
While Our current focus is on creating clusters of floating SeaPods with optional
underwater rooms. These communities would represent a new frontier in sustainable
living, emphasizing harmony with the ocean while pushing the boundaries of innovation.
We are currently exploring exciting possibilities for the next generation of underwater
homes and businesses. While an undersea city remains a distant vision, we are
advancing the science that will make it possible.
