How You Can Show Up and Support the LGBTQ+ Community

How You Can Show Up and Support the LGBTQ+ Community

“Diversity is a beautiful thing, just enjoy it.” — Monica Trasandes

Thirty days is not enough to celebrate our latino community, and here, at LATV, we’ll continue to do it for a lifetime.

As part of My Health Agenda Series, we’re also highlighting some important topics that revolve around the LGBTQ community.

We spoke to Monica Trasandes, none other than the Director of Spanish Language & Latinx Media and Representation at GLAAD, who shared with us some resources that GLAAD provides in English y en español.

“When I started at GLAAD very few people were out, and now, it is very hard to boil it down to only 30 people for 30 days. It’s a big community and it’s growing,” Tresandes told LATV. “Understand there are a lot of people in the world and Latinx who are gay, bi or bisexuales and who are transgender men and women.”

What’s the most important thing about showing support to the LGBTQ community?

Being knowledgeable and knowing that there are a lot of us in our community whose orientation has to do with who you love and for others, that has to do with gender identity. Identity has to do with who you are whether you are male or female or maybe neither… or, maybe a little bit of both, maybe you are a non-binary person.

How has diversity and inclusion evolved over the years?

Just know that the world has always been diverse. Before, people could not talk about who they were without losing their jobs or losing their families. There was a lot of prejudice. But the world has always been beautifully diverse. It’s not as simple as male and female. Sexuality and gender identity are very different complex fascinating things.

How is GLAAD highlighting Latino voices during Hispanic Heritage Month?

We’re going to feature a profile of someone who is Latino Latino or LGBTQ every single day. Thirty days is not enough, which is a very fantastic situation to be in now.

And that situation means we get to celebrate all year round.

Stay tuned for more updates on My Health Agenda and our stories on the Latino Alternative Movement.
