Meet Lautaro Martínez, The Star of Inter Milan

Meet Lautaro Martínez, The Star of Inter Milan

Lautaro Martínez has been a standout player at Inter Milan for quite some time. This season, he stepped onto the field for the Champions League final not just as one of their star forwards but as the captain.

And he’s not just any captain. He’s already lifted seven trophies with the club, become their all-time leading scorer in the Champions League, and led a team that reached the final by defeating powerhouses like Bayern Munich and Barcelona. He’s accomplished almost everything. But in the end, Inter fell short. In the final against PSG, they lost 5-0. Still, getting to that stage was a testament to the team’s journey, and Lautaro’s leadership at the heart of it.

Lautaro’s journey to this moment began back in Argentina with Racing Club. He made his professional debut in 2015 and was already making headlines by the time he moved to Inter Milan in 2018. At first, he was just another promising forward from South America. Fast forward seven seasons, he’s one of the most feared attackers in Europe. 151 goals in 330 games. Two Serie A titles. Three Supercoppa Italiana victories. Two Coppa Italia wins. And now, another Champions League final added to his resume.

He was there in 2020 when Inter lost the Europa League final to Sevilla. And again in 2023, when they lost the Champions League final to Manchester City. Both were painful. Both unforgettable. Lautaro says those losses made him stronger. And looking at what he’s accomplished this season, it’s hard to disagree.

In this year’s Champions League, Lautaro netted 9 goals across 13 games. His crucial goal against Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals shattered Adriano’s record, securing his spot as Inter’s all-time top scorer in the tournament. When facing Barcelona, he was a relentless force. He scored, provided assists, and took charge. If Inter reached the final, Lautaro’s influence was unmistakable.

Coach Simone Inzaghi highlights that Lautaro sets a great example every day. It goes beyond just scoring goals; it’s how he trains, supports his teammates, and manages the pressure. He’s not just the team’s star striker; he’s their heartbeat.

But Lautaro isn’t just making history at his club. With Argentina, he has also amassed a notable collection of medals: a World Cup champion in 2022, Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024, and the 2022 Finalissima victory over Italy. Even though he struggled in the World Cup and lost his starting spot, he made a remarkable comeback in 2024 to become the top scorer of the Copa America, including scoring the decisive goal that won Argentina the title against Colombia.

What makes Lautaro so impressive isn’t just the stats or the trophies. It’s the way he keeps showing up when it matters most. Despite being injured in Qatar, he still stepped up to score the penalty that sent Argentina to the World Cup semis. Struggling with scoring for over a year, he broke his drought and then topped the Copa America scoring charts. And when Inter needed someone to guide them through Europe’s toughest matches, he was there.

This season may not have ended with the Champions League trophy, but Lautaro’s legacy only keeps growing. There’s no doubt about the impact he’s made at Inter, with Argentina, and across world football.
