FORMULA 1

F1 is back with four Grand Prix races this month:

-Miami: May 2-4

-Imola, Italy: May 16-18

-Monaco: May 23-25

-Spain: May 30 – June 1

The only full-time Latino driver this season? Gabriel Bortoleto, a 20-year-old from Brazil. He’s the 2023 Formula 3 champion, now driving for Kick Sauber (formerly Alfa Romeo). He’s the lone Latino on the grid, and every point counts.

NASCAR

Mexico’s Daniel Suárez keeps showing up strong in the NASCAR Cup Series. In 2022, he made history as only the second Latino to win a Cup Series race. This May, he’s got four races on deck:

-Würth 400: May 4 – Texas Motor Speedway

-Kansas 400: May 11 – Kansas Speedway

-All-Star Race: May 18 – North Wilkesboro Speedway

-Coca-Cola 600: May 25 – Charlotte Motor Speedway

UFC

Plenty of fights and a few names to keep an eye on:

-May 3 – UFC Fight Night: Deiveson Figueiredo (Brazil) vs. Cory Sandhagen

-May 10 – UFC 315 in Montreal

-May 17 – UFC Fight Night: Gilbert Burns (Brazil) vs. Michael Morales (Ecuador)

-May 31 – UFC Fight Night: Blanchfield vs. Barber

Burns vs. Morales is a big one. Both Latinos. Both with a lot to prove. It should be a heavy matchup.

TENNIS

Roland Garros (French Open) starts May 19 in Paris. The clay is tough, but Latinos always show up strong, especially from Argentina and Brazil.

Men:

-Argentina: Francisco Cerundolo (21), Sebastian Baez (33), Tomas Martin Etcheverry (51), Camilo Ugo Carabelli (59), Francisco Comesana (70), Mariano Navone (85)

-Chile: Alejandro Tabile (35), Nicolas Jarry (57)

-Brazil: Joao Fonseca (65), Thiago Monteiro (94)

-Bolivia: Hugo Dellien (99)

Women:

-Brazil: Beatriz Haddad Maia (19)

-Colombia: Camila Osorio (51), Emiliana Arango (84)

-Mexico: Renata Zarazua (67)

Bonus: NBA Playoffs

While Latinos are still a small group in the NBA, a few names are making their mark, especially among coaching and international fan bases. Expect more Latino presence in courtside culture than on rosters for now, but the playoffs are in full swing this May, and the heat is on.

May is stacked. And so are we. Whether it’s racing, soccer, UFC, tennis, or basketball, Latinos are showing up across sports this May. Some are breaking records, some are just starting out, and others are putting in work where it counts.
