Historic Moment: First Public Event with Karen Bass as LA Elected Mayor

On Thursday, November 17th a major historical event happened. Mayor Eric Garcetti introduced the new elected Los Angeles Mayor, Karen Bass for the first time at a Latino event, The Latino Leaders Network.

Mickey Ibarra the CEO and Founder, introduced Eric Garcetti.

“Let me just begin by thanking you, Mayor Eric Garcetti for your leadership over 10 years in Los Angeles over some very difficult times. Who on earth would imagine a pandemic? But you led us through those difficult times,” said Ibarra.

Mayor Garcetti entered after a round of applause to introduce Karen Bass after a few words. Bass injected the room with an optimism and enthusiasm that was palpable and contagious. She made a very clear point and a call for unity between the minorities; especially within the Black and Latino communities.

“Building coalitions is what is all about. When you add our folks together you have tremendous power and that’s what we have done for generations,” she said.

She graciously thanked Dolores Huerta for her endless work for the community and for being the pioneer she was.

“The idea of a generational leaders for me is Dolores Huerta. She was there for the beginning and she has supported me in so many occasions. We love you, I adore you and you are a hero, not just in California but in our nation.”

She also thanked Speaker Anthony Rendon for all his work for the community.

 I’m so proud of your leadership because you were able to serve at a time when you brought us to supermajority in our state. Those of us in Washington, brag about you.
