Friendship Goals: Latino Celebrity Friendships We Love

Friendship Goals: Latino Celebrity Friendships We Love

National Friendship Day occurs every year on the first Sunday of August and celebrates the importance of loving, platonic relationships. Our friends provide us with companionship, support, and laughter, they are there for us through thick and thin, and they make our lives richer and more meaningful.

This date was originally a marketing strategy for Hallmark Cards in the 1930s. Founder Joyce Hall decided that the day would take place on August 2nd, and its purpose would be to celebrate the people closest to you — and send them a card or two in the process. It soon became a bigger deal than originally planned when the 1935 US Congress pronounced the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day.

To celebrate National Friendship Day, we grouped some of the Latinx celebrity friendships that we love the most:

Selena Gomez and Camila Cabello

These two singers have been friends for many years, and they are always there for each other. They have supported each other’s careers, and even talked publicly, and together, about their struggles with mental health. However, they have also enjoyed the best parts of friendships, such as doing lip-syncs, downing some margaritas, and hanging out at funfairs.

María Becerra and Tini Stoessel

María Becerra jumped to success with her hit “High.” In late 2020, fellow Argentinian singer Tini collaborated with her on the Remix, and since then, they have become inseparable. A year later, they worked together again in “Miénteme,” a song that topped every chart and made their friendship even tighter.

“High represents the beginning of a lot of things. It was the beginning of a friendship; we realized that we connected beyond music because the conversation flowed. In many moments we were alone, and we connected to talk, to share, to open up, to trust. Tini is very special to me. She looks you in the eye and knows everything,” she said in a Spanish interview.

María Becerra has also defended Tini Stoessel after she was criticized by another Argentine singer, Leo García: “If you don’t have talent, if you don’t have discipline, you won’t last. Tini is the best person I’ve met in the industry– she’s kind, generous, and helps other artists. She’s extremely talented; she sings, dances, composes her own songs, and is dedicated to her job like no one else. The success that she has is completely deserved. The vast majority of us are very dedicated artists. Most of us write our own songs- I, at the age of 22, composed a worldwide hit, so I will not accept someone coming and devaluing that because they’re spiteful,” Becerra asserted.

Diego Luna and Gael García Bernal

These two successful Mexican actors and co-founders of Ambulante, a non-profit documentary film festival, have been friends ever since they were children- literally when they were just days old. A while ago, García Bernal revealed to The Independent the story of how long they’ve actually known each other:

“I met him when he was two days old, and I was about one and my mother took me to visit him in the Mexican hospital where he was born. I think I ended up poking him in the face. We spent a lot of time together as babies, but my father remembers the first time that Diego and I really became friends. We were walking with our parents in this beautiful plaza near our homes when we bumped into each other. Diego and I greeted each other and started to play and then – being little boys – fight. Since then, we’ve spent most of our lives hanging out together”.

Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz

Salma Hayek and Penélope Cruz, two of the movie industry’s biggest stars, have had a close friendship that has spanned over 20 years. Their relationship began years ago when Penélope called Salma to thank her for her continuous public praise.

The Mexican actress ended up inviting the Spanish actress to her home, thus starting a deep and lasting friendship. Throughout the years, Salma Hayek and Penelope Cruz have celebrated professional achievements together, supported each other through difficult times, and mutually inspired the other to continue moving forward in the film industry. They also worked together in the 2006 film “Bandidas.”
