Latina Mom with Terminal Cancer Seeks Humanitarian Visa for Parents as Last Wish

Paula Durán, a young latina mom of three, was diagnosed with cancer last year when she was eight months pregnant. She was given one month left to live.

Paula gave birth to her third child, Juan José, in December, they had to perform a cesarean section to get the baby out before it was too late. After many tests, doctors discovered that the cancer was in the brain and stomach walls and was quickly spreading.

The Colombian family, who migrated to the U.S. in search of a better life, is now seeking help from friends, family and strangers on social media who have —generously— given them donations and even set up a GoFund Me account in their name.

Faith is keeping the family alive

Paula and her husband are fighting until the last second with a lot of faith, because they know that God is working a miracle. Sergio Vega, who is a former indoor soccer (Futsal) player, is the only breadwinner and since they received the news, he has been taking care of his wife and three children as she has not been able to leave her hospital bed.

Angels of Justice

The help has quickly come in donations, and even an immigration lawyer who has agreed to take their case pro bono. The family is seeking a humanitarian visa for the parents of both, Paula and her husband Sergio Vega, to travel to the U.S. and spend the last few days with her.

Moved by seeing Paula’s story—known as the el Ángel de la Justicia (angel of justice)— Peruvian-born attorney Jessica Domínguez announced during the morning show Despierta America this morning that she will be helping the family. During the segment, Sergio Vega could not hold back his tears and gave her a deep hug, thanking her for the support she will give them. The lawyer, excited to take on the case with her team, promised to do everything possible to achieve the former futsal player’s wish.

“Faith moves mountains and we are going to fight together.” Lawyer Jessica Domínguez.

Vega, grateful for the number of messages of support he has received, delivered a message of hope for seeing the mother of his three children fully recovered.

“I only ask God to give me my wife for many more years. I married her for life, I swore love to her before God, in sickness and in health, and that’s what I’ve been doing.”
