Inside Karol G’s Tropicoqueta: Nostalgia, Perreo, and Pure Latin Joy

Reggaeton superstar Karol G is back with her highly anticipated fifth studio album Tropicoqueta, a 20-track celebration of Latin music in all its richness. Released on June 20, the album fuses Karol G’s signature reggaeton sound with cumbia, ranchera, vallenato, bachata, afrobeat, pop, reggae, merengue, mambo, brazilian, bolero, and tropical genres, all as a heartfelt homage to the romantic music traditions of Latin America.

The Colombian singer described Tropicoqueta as a project “full of soul, passion, memory, joy, nostalgia, identity, and celebration.” On social media, she wrote: “This album is a journey. Each song is a world. A different rhythm. A different feeling. I think that’s where the magic is, and the challenge too, that it’s not all revealed at first. It’s an album to stay with you, to rediscover a different song every day.”

Karol G’s Tropicoqueta Is a Love Letter to Latin Music

The album includes collaborations with a stellar lineup of artists, such as Greeicy, Thalía, Manu Chao, and Marco Antonio Solís. On “Coleccionando Heridas,” Karol G and Solís trade lines in a tender duet: “They say love stayed in other times,” she sings, to which Solís replies, “I still feel it.”

Tropicoqueta kicks off with a nod to Mexican popular music, featuring a spoken introduction from Thalía herself, declaring that Karol G has evolved from “Bebecita, to Bichota, to Tropicoqueta.”

The album brings fresh sounds to her style without abandoning reggaeton. Tracks like “Latina Foreva” serve up pure perreo, while the techno merengue of “Papasito” is a playful nod to Venezuelan influences, with a music video starring Danny Ramirez inspired by West Side Story.

Karol G pays tribute to Dominican merengue on the hit single “Si Antes Te Hubiera Conocido,” to bachata on “Amiga Mía” with Greeicy, to vallenato with “No Puedo Vivir Sin Él,” and to cumbia villera from Argentina with “Cuando Me Muera Te Olvido.” There’s even a track in Portuguese, “Bandida Entrenada.”

Closing the album on a lighter note is “Viajando Por El Mundo,” a duet with Manu Chao, which evokes a sense of freedom and joy.

Fans also get a surprise track: “Cancion 13” (“Verano Rosa” on YouTube), a collaboration with Karol G’s boyfriend and singer, Feid.

Throughout the project, Karol G infuses her love for Latin culture and her roots. The aesthetics of the album’s visuals and videos draw on the glamor of old telenovelas, featuring icons like Ricky Martin, Itatí Cantoral, Gabriela Spanic, and Ninel Conde. One teaser video even nods to the legendary Cuban cabaret Tropicana.

The album arrives with high expectations, following the massive success of Mañana Será Bonito, which inspired a Netflix documentary, a global tour, and earned a Latin Grammy for Best Urban Music Album.

“Listen to it multiple times, with calm, with excitement, with an open heart and no prejudice,” Karol G encouraged fans. “Because this album isn’t just about me. It’s about you too. About what it makes you feel, what it reminds you of.”
