Jorge-Armando Diaz: A Trailblazer for Mental Health and HIV Awareness

Jorge-Armando Diaz, a mental health clinician, activist, and leader, has become a prominent figure in the fight against HIV stigma and for the overall well-being of the Latinx LGBTQ+ community. With an extensive background in social work and a personal journey living with HIV for over two decades, Diaz has dedicated his life to creating positive change and empowering others through education, advocacy, and personal storytelling.

Jorge’s journey began at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he obtained his master’s degree in Social Work. Armed with a deep passion for addressing the interconnected issues of mental health, HIV, and the Latinx LGBTQ+ community, Diaz embarked on a career that would make a lasting impact on countless lives.

Jorge is the main character of this week’s episode of Living Y Ready. In this new short form series produced by LATV’s LGBTQ+ creator community, we’re reframing the narrative around HIV through informative segments, candid conversations and queer expression.

Currently serving as the Program Manager of the Nosotros VIHviendo programming at Equality California, Diaz plays a crucial role in providing resources, support, and education to individuals living with HIV. His work focuses on empowering and uplifting those affected by the virus, breaking down the barriers of stigma, and promoting a society that is inclusive and understanding.

In addition to his work at Equality California, Diaz also serves as a Patient Ambassador for SNOW Companies, where he traverses the United States, sharing his personal journey and the invaluable lessons he has learned during his 20+ years of living with HIV. Through his compelling storytelling, Diaz aims to inspire hope, raise awareness, and combat the misinformation surrounding HIV and its impact on individuals and communities.

Diaz’s remarkable dedication to activism has not gone unnoticed. In 2010, he was honored as one of the 100 Heroes by POZ Magazine, recognizing his outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to making a difference in Los Angeles. This recognition further solidified Diaz’s reputation as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change.

Utilizing the power of the written word, Diaz also contributes his voice and expertise as a writer for Adelante Magazine, a prominent Latino LGBTQ+ publication. In his monthly articles, Diaz fearlessly tackles important topics ranging from machismo to toxic masculinity, inviting readers to engage in bold and honest conversations that challenge societal norms and promote understanding.

Through his diverse roles as a mental health clinician, activist, leader, writer, and public speaker, Jorge-Armando Diaz has emerged as an influential force in the fight for HIV awareness and mental health support within the Latinx LGBTQ+ community. His unwavering dedication, compassionate approach, and personal resilience continue to shape the lives of those he encounters, fostering a more inclusive and accepting society for all.

As Diaz continues to forge ahead on his journey of advocacy, his impact promises to transcend boundaries, break down barriers, and uplift the voices of the marginalized. With his work and unwavering dedication, Diaz sets an inspiring example for all those who strive to make a positive difference in the world.
