Johnny Lau’s Debut Celebrates Peruvian Heritage and Artistic Vision

With a sound that beautifully fuses his Peruvian roots and contemporary influences, Johnny Lau is ready to make his mark in music.

Reflecting on his journey, celebrating his brand-new home, Noel Schajris’ label DYNAMO, Lau recalls a pivotal moment in his life when he realized, “This is my thing.” He remembers his childhood passion for writing and how a gift from a family friend—a guitar—sparked a deep connection to music.

“It was so much frustration at not knowing how to play that I began practicing relentlessly. One day, by pure coincidence, I discovered I could mix the two things I loved—writing and playing.” This revelation led him to find his true calling: “When I discovered that combination, I found out what I wanted to do for the rest of my life: write songs and sing them.”

As Lau embarks on this exciting new chapter with DYNAMO, he carries the spirit of Peru with him. “I’m a big fan of great Peruvian authors like Chabuca Granda and Augusto Polo Campos, who are historical figures in our music. They’ve definitely influenced my songwriting,” he shares. His deep connection to his heritage is evident in his music, especially his affection for the genre of son. “It represents me and my music, and I always carry my homeland in my soul.”

Transitioning to a broader audience, Lau recognizes the challenges artists face. “We can be on top of the world or deeply depressed; it’s a difficult career,” he admits. “But we always have to put on our best face for the audience and sing with our hearts.” This emotional connection is crucial, as Lau believes it is what allows artists to truly engage with their fans, even in moments of vulnerability.

Looking to the future, Lau envisions exciting crossover opportunities, including potential collaborations that could bridge language barriers. “I see myself in a situation where I have to record in English, and that’s really important for me to unlock some fears and connect with our audience,” he says.
