Puerto Rican Hurdler Jasmine Camacho-Quinn Takes Gold in Tokyo

In a stunning race, hurdler Jasmine Camacho-Quinn took the gold medal in the women’s 100m race while repping Puerto Rico at the Tokyo Olympics.

In a commanding performance, Camacho-Quinn confirmed why she was considered the favorite heading into the event. just one-tenth of a second shy from tying her own olympic record. Kendra Harrison of the United States and Megan Tapper of Jamaica rounded out the podium, taking silver and bronze respectively.

Born in South Carolina, Jasmine was born into a family of athletes and became a track star at the University of Kentucky. She chose to represent Puerto Rico to honor her mother who is from Trujillo Alto. After being disqualified back in the Rio 2016 games for hitting a barrier, it’s clear that Camacho-Quinn was determined to achieve a different outcome. With this most recent win, her olympic career has now come full circle.

Jasmine’s historic race joins the growing list of other inspirational Latin Olympian stories such as DACA recipient Luis Grijalva representing Guatemala, Ecuador’s Neisi Patricia Dajomes Barrera taking gold in weightlifting, and Mexico’s Aremi Fuentes Zavala taking bronze in the same event. Tokyo is also proving to be one of the most inclusive olympics yet with more LGBTQIA+ athletes participating than ever before like Mexican diver Diego Balleza.
