Don Omar Shuts Down Retirement Rumors

Rumors about Don Omar’s retirement were debunked by his team this week. The Puerto Rican artist, known worldwide as the “King of Reggaeton,” isn’t just continuing in music but he’s gearing up for a new album and a global tour by 2026.
“That came from an interview he did in July, which went viral now, but at no point does he plan to leave music, quite the opposite,” his team clarified. “His words were misinterpreted.”

In an interview with Telemundo, Don Omar, whose real name is William Omar Ladrón Rivera, spoke about his legacy and the importance of giving space to new generations in urban music. “Daddy Yankee retired, Héctor el Father today has his new life. I think time will continue to demand from each of us to look towards the moment we have to pass the baton,” said the 47-year-old singer.
Far from announcing a definitive farewell, his words emphasized his commitment to the genre’s future: “Having the opportunity to stay relevant. It’s super important to work with the new generations, it’s crucial to collaborate and make a lasting impact.”
In the same conversation, Don Omar confirmed that he would return to the studio in October with two main projects: A compilation album with his greatest hits from 25 years of career and a new unreleased album he plans to release in 2026, accompanied by a global tour.

“I want to get back to the studio in October, I want to do two projects: one with all of Don Omar’s hits from 25 years and another with one final album,” the artist explained, making it clear that he’s all about continuing to create and celebrate his music with fans around the world.
In June 2023, Don Omar shared publicly that he had been diagnosed with kidney cancer. After undergoing surgery and receiving prompt treatment, the artist is in remission. “After cancer, nothing looks the same. I’m living this second life where all I want is to enjoy the journey,” he expressed.
He recalled that a year before his operation, fear overwhelmed him: “Just a year ago, I was scared to death, I wasn’t fighting with God, I never asked why, but I did have the desire not to die.” Now, that experience drives him to appreciate music more and face new challenges.

Since his beginnings in the late ’90s, Don Omar has been a key player in the internationalization of reggaeton. Hits like Bandoleros, Danza Kuduro, and Salió el sol have solidified him as a global reference. He has sold over 70 million records and amassed an estimated fortune of $30 million, stemming from his artistic career and his ventures as an entrepreneur.
In 2017, he announced a farewell tour, Forever King, The Last Tour, although it was later revealed that it was the result of conflicts with his record label. Two years later, he returned to the stage with renewed energy. His latest tour, Back to Reggaeton in 2024, grossed over $17.8 million and sold around 150,000 tickets at its first concerts, demonstrating that his drawing power remains undiminished.
