Honey Don’t! Is Aubrey Plaza’s Latest Queer Mystery and We’re Obsessed

Let’s talk about Honey Don’t!, the new queer crime comedy that’s got the internet buzzing. It stars Margaret Qualley, Chris Evans, and the queen of spooky-sexy-weird energy herself, Aubrey Plaza. The film comes from Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke, a duo who are clearly on a mission to queer up the B-movie universe, one chaotic script at a time.

So, what’s the movie about? Margaret Qualley plays Honey, a queer PI digging into a shady church run by a super charismatic but super sketchy leader played by Chris Evans, who’s clearly loving the chance to break away from his Marvel persona.

And just when things couldn’t get any weirder, Aubrey Plaza enters the scene as “a mysterious woman”.

Qualley recently gave us a little more of a peek into her character. Honey is smooth, strategic, and always five steps ahead. She’s not your clumsy gumshoe; she’s quiet, calculated, and knows how to move without leaving a trace. Qualley even mentioned she had to dial back her usual quirky vibes to play someone so chill and in control.

Now, Aubrey Plaza’s role is still a mystery, which just makes everyone even more intrigued. All we know is she’s playing “a mysterious woman,” but honestly, that says it all. If there’s one thing Plaza has nailed, it’s the part of the quietly dangerous, maybe queer, probably not entirely trustworthy woman.

So, it’s no shocker that as soon as her casting was announced, fans went wild online. And of course, Chris Evans as a culty church leader? Perfect. Throw Charlie Day, Billy Eichner, and Gabby Beans into the mix, and you’ve got a cast that promises chaos in all the right ways.

Behind the camera, Ethan Coen directs while Tricia Cooke edits. They’re a married couple with a sharp eye and a distinct mission: to create quirky, queer, genre-bending films that defy the usual Hollywood norm. Their last movie together, Drive-Away Dolls, was exactly that: a queer road trip caper featuring Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan going all out. Now with Honey Don’t!, they’re diving into a noir-inspired universe rich with dry humor and sapphic tension.

Qualley even revealed that Honey Don’t! is the second in a planned trilogy of queer B-movies from the Coen-Cooke team. So if you loved Drive-Away Dolls, you’re definitely gonna want to stick around for this and whatever comes next. Qualley herself joked that if she’s not in the third film, she’ll be “offended and upset.”

The movie is already turning heads ahead of its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it’ll screen as part of the Midnight Screenings, the section for films that are a little weird, a little wild, and definitely not boring. After that, it hits U.S. theaters on August 22, and if things go like last time, it’ll be streaming soon after.

At the end of the day, ‘Honey Don’t!’ is shaping up to be everything you want from a summer movie: stylish, quirky, a little bit racy, and totally unapologetic about being queer. Aubrey Plaza playing a woman you can’t quite figure out, Margaret Qualley as a PI who doesn’t put up with anyone’s nonsense, and Chris Evans preaching in some kind of cult chapel. We’re all in. And if you’re not already obsessed, you soon will be.
