Level Up Your Health This June by Checking Your HIV Status

Every year on June 27, National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) reminds us that knowing your HIV status is one of the most powerful steps you can take for your health and for your community. Since its first observation in 1995, NHTD has been a call to action to get tested, know your status, and connect to care.

This year’s theme, “Level Up Your Self-Love: Check Your Status,” reinforces a message of self-respect and empowerment. By getting tested, you’re not just taking charge of your health; you’re also practicing self-care, compassion, and advocacy for yourself and those around you.

National HIV Testing Day Is a Reminder to Check In with Yourself

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2022, there were an estimated 1.2 million people in the U.S. living with HIV, but about 13% didn’t know their status. Among young people ages 13-24, just over half knew they were HIV-positive.

Why does this matter? Because knowing your status is the key to getting the right care:

  • If your test is negative, you can take preventive steps like pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), using condoms, and regular STI screenings.
  • If your test is positive, starting antiretroviral therapy (ART) can help you stay healthy and prevent the transmission of HIV to others.

Testing is more accessible than ever in the U.S. Thanks to initiatives like Together TakeMeHome, free HIV self-testing kits are available for those who might not have easy access to in-person testing or may feel stigma about visiting a clinic.

Taking Action

Routine testing is recommended for everyone aged 13 to 64 at least once, with annual testing advised for those at higher risk. Many local clinics and community organizations provide free or low-cost testing, and self-testing kits can be ordered online.

As part of the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative in the U.S., HIV testing is a crucial tool in reducing new infections and addressing disparities in healthcare. Resources like America’s HIV Epidemic Analysis Dashboard (AHEAD) aid in tracking progress and guiding community strategies.

Spread the Word

Getting tested for HIV is a simple but powerful act of self-love and care. On June 27, join the conversation on social media with the hashtag #HIVTestingDay. Encourage your friends and family to check their status and make HIV testing a regular part of their healthcare.

Knowing your status means taking control of your health and helping to build a healthier, more informed, and more compassionate community for everyone.
