Nour Milla and Humberto Guida take on the Spartan Race in this episode of Ganadoras

What’s the Spartan Race?

The Spartan Race, as its name suggests, is no stroll through the park! This intense obstacle course requires physical endurance, mental stamina, and lots of teamwork as participants jump and climb over walls, crawl under barbed wire, and lift and carry very heavy objects. The goal? Simple- test your strength and endurance and never give up, however long that takes. After all, no pain, no gain!

With more than 200 races in 30 different countries, The Spartan Race has become a global phenomenon, attracting millions of enthusiasts with the sole objective of reaching the coveted finish line. And the best part is that you don’t need to be an expert or successful athlete.

Gary Belanger, the Global Director at Spartan Race, chatted with Nour Milla, saying, “You have everyone from sprinters, people that are doing 16-minute 5Ks, and the people that will probably take two hours to do this 5K. Our obstacles are challenging, but they’re meant for everybody. And we have a penalty- if you don’t finish an obstacle, you have to do 30 burpees, and you get to move on. So you’re still a finisher. Everyone can finish, and it’s a great time. You finish it, you get the medal: you’ve earned it.”

Alejandra Ortega, one of the racers, shared her incredible experience. “I love the obstacles, doing it with friends. I think we ought to keep challenging each other to do things like that. I recently got into a motorcycle accident three months ago. So I wanted to prove to myself that I was strong enough to do it. And I realized that everything comes from the core, so keep your center. It was amazing.”

Nour recounted her own Spartan journey, admitting, “If I’m being completely honest, there were moments I thought it was just too much for my body to bear and that I just couldn’t make it. I was freaking livid at Humberto because I was not expecting the severity of this race. It’s definitely very mental as well. But, in the end, we did it and it took me a full two hours and 15 minutes to claim my medal.” As for Humberto, not only did he finish strong, but he proudly declared, “I ended up getting third in my age group and 13th out of 1,600 people.”

Spartan is an event that should be experienced at least once in a lifetime. The sense of accomplishment is unparalleled, especially when your goal is to break through your own self-imposed limits. It’s pure magic for your psyche.

If you’d like to participate in the Spartan Race, Gary Belanger explained how you can get into this epic adventure: “We have over 50 events in the U.S., many more here in California. Spartan.com will have the full list of races and we’ll be back a couple of times in California. This is one of our best markets – we’ll have over 10,000 racers finishing this weekend!”
