Meet Gaby Moreno
Maria Gabriela Moreno Bonilla, known to her fans as Gaby Moreno, was born on December 16, 1981, in Guatemala City. Her passion for music led her to move to Los Angeles, where she embarked on a successful career that has seen her release eight albums and earn four Grammy nominations. She won a Latin Grammy in 2013 for Best New Artist.
Gaby’s albums have received critical acclaim. “Illusion” was nominated for Best Latin Pop Album in 2017, and “Alegoría” for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album in 2022. Her latest works include “X Mí (Vol. 1),” nominated for Best Latin Pop Album in 2023, and her role in producing Omara Portuondo’s album “Vida,” which also earned a Grammy nomination.
In August 2009, Gaby toured with Tracy Chapman, and later in November 2009, she toured as direct support for Ani Difranco on an East Coast tour. Difranco invited Gaby back out on tour in January and February 2010. By July 2010, Gaby was touring in Germany and France, bringing her unique sound to audiences in cities like Constance, Heidelberg, and Ravensburg.

In early 2011, Gaby and her band played their first headlining tour, performing in the Netherlands and Belgium as part of the “World Sessions” tour. They also opened for Nouvelle Vague in Germany. In late 2011, Gaby toured the U.S. East Coast as direct support for The Milk Carton Kids. Her international presence continued to grow with performances in France, Ireland, and several other countries.
Apart from her albums, Gaby has made significant contributions to TV and film. She co-wrote the theme song for the TV series “Parks and Recreation” and sings the theme song for Disney’s “Elena of Avalor.” Her music has been featured in films such as “Puss in Boots – The Last Wish” and “The Valet,” earning her nominations alongside big names like Taylor Swift and Lady Gaga.

Moreno played some concerts in France in February 2012 and later performed with Ricardo Arjona during his “Metamorfosis World Tour.” In June, she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to commemorate 50 years of Amnesty International, alongside Kris Kristofferson and others. She also played at the “Electric Burma” event in honor of Aung San Suu Kyi with Bono, Damien Rice, and others.
Gaby’s 2019 album, ¡Spangled!, was a collaboration with Van Dyke Parks and featured the song “Across The Borderline” with Jackson Browne. This album was a celebration of the migration of music across the Americas and earned a Latin Grammy nomination.

In 2020, Gaby composed the music for the film “Language Lessons,” and her song “Mal Hombre” was featured in Guillermo del Toro’s TV series “Cabinet of Curiosities.”
In 2013, she toured with Hugh Laurie and The Copper Bottom Band through Europe, and in March 2014, she toured South America, performing in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico. In February and March 2015, she played at Festival Acústico under the name “Gaby Moreno y amigos,” featuring guest appearances by Oscar Isaac, Sara Watkins, and others.

Gaby’s work extends beyond music. She uses her platform to advocate for immigrants and marginalized communities. She was recently named the first UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador from Guatemala and collaborates with various organizations to support those in need.
Starting in 2016, Gaby became a recurring guest on Live From Here. In 2018, she released a cover of David Rudder’s song “The Immigrants,” with proceeds benefiting CARECEN. Her album ¡Spangled! was released in 2020, featuring a diverse mix of songs from across the Americas.
