Five New Events Coming to the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles For 2028

Five new events will be held at The 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) approval came after after reviewing a proposal made by the LA28 Organizing Committee.
The five new sports are Baseball/softball, cricket (T20), flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash.
Some of these sports are making returns, their debut, and a variation of sports before them.
Squash
The sport of squash has grown in popularity over the past few years.
“The sport has enjoyed spectacular growth over the last few years, especially among young people, with an 87 percent increase in squash participation between 2015 and 2019 in the United States.” According to Olypics.com
What is squash?
According to the Olympics.com “Squash is a racket sport usually played by two people on a rectangular court enclosed by four walls. The floor is made of hardwood with walls in professional competition constructed from safety glass to enable spectators to watch the action.”
The sport will be making its first Olympic appearance ever in Los Angeles.

Baseball and softball
Two of the world’s most beloved sports are returning for LA28. Baseball and softball will be back eight years after we last saw them… The previous time these sports were played was at the Tokyo Olympics.
Japan took home Gold for both events. The host country also Defeated the United States in the final round to seal their victories.
Cricket T-20
What is cricket?
“Cricket is a bat-and-ball team sport where the batting side tries to score as many runs as possible while the bowling side attempts to get the batter out. Cricket bats are constructed from high-grade willow with balls made of leather stitched onto a cork core.” according to Olympics.com
T-20 means 20 overs per side.
This won’t be the first time we see the sport at the Olympics. Back in 1900 at the Paris games, we saw the event played. Schedule to make a return 128 years later. Back in 1900, it was a single two-inning-a-side two-day match where Great Britain’s Devon and Somerset Wanderers defeated France’s French Athletic Club Union.

Lacrosse (sixes)
Sixes is an incredibly fast-paced, Lacrosse Sixes “is a compact version of lacrosse, combining the most exciting elements of the more traditional disciplines. Field lacrosse has been played before in different Olympic Games. LA28 will be the first time we will get to see this quicker version played.

Flag football
A version of America’s favorite sport will be at LA28. Flag football is a safer version of its predecessor Football. This version of the sport is where the opponents take each other’s flags to stop each other rather than physically tackling one another.
“More children aged 6-12 play flag football than tackle football in the US and, at the elite level, there are approximately 20 million flag football players across over 100 countries, with gender balance,” per Olympics.com
