Exposure Skate – The Inclusive Event That Is Changing Skateboarding

Held annually in Encinitas, CA is a skateboarding competition, inclusive space, and advocacy fundraiser that is unparalleled in the sport.
Exposure Skate was founded in 2012, inspired by Co-Founder and Olympic skater Amelia Brodka‘s documentary film ‘Underexposed: A Women’s Skateboarding Documentary‘ that brought to light the lack of opportunities for women in skateboarding. Along with Lesli Cohen, the two established Exposure as 501(c)(3) non-profit with the mission of empowering women, trans, and non-binary individuals through skateboarding.
“Our goal is to create and event that is inclusive and showcases skaters from different walks of life. Women, trans, non-binary skaters. Our main motto is community over competition” – Amelia Brodka
The skating world has taken notice as the biggest media outlets in action sports cover the competition, as well as some of the most recognized names in skateboarding like Christian Hosoi and Tony Hawk. As for the skaters themselves, Exposure has contestants from all over the world from Scotland to Japan. Though they’re competing in vert, bowl, and streets events, what stands out in Exposure’s atmosphere is the camaraderie and support the skaters have for one another.
Lizzie Armanto, one of the most decorated female skaters in the world, has previously competed in Exposure and continues to show her support.
“It’s very grass-roots but I feel like that’s extra special because people from all over the world come to this event. This is the biggest women’s event in skateboarding in my opinion.” – Lizzie Armanto
As a non-profit, programs Exposure benefits includes ‘Skate Rising’, a free monthly class for girls 4-18 to learn skateboarding from Pros / Olympians, and two $5,000 scholarships awarded to women / non-binary students. The 2021 Exposure Skate event also raised $60,000 to support survivors of domestic violence.
