Eugenio Derbez TV Show Directed by Non-Latinx

Apple announced their new series starring Eugenio Derbez, Acapulco, which is based on a movie the Mexican actor starred in and produced, “How To Be A Latin Lover.” And while we love that there are more Latinx shows out there, it’s very disappointing to find out that behind the cameras, the reality is usually quite different.

Richard Shepard is now onboard to direct the pilot, and while he is a great director, he is not a Latino. The American award winning director is of Austro-Hungarian-Jewish and Armenian descent.

But who are we to blame? Hollywood? Not really. It takes well-established Latin talent to set the example. Eva Longoria, Eugenio Derbez, Lin Manuel Miranda, Salma Hayek…we all need you to step up and put your money where your mouth is, because if Latinos don’t support Latinos, unfortunately these stories are going to be told by others behind the camera.
