The Aguilar Family Tree: Three Generations of Ranchera Greatness

The Aguilar family, often known as “La Dinastía Aguilar,” is one of Mexico’s most beloved musical dynasties, with a rich story involving traditional Mexican music, cinema, and now, even a modern digital influence.

Recently, multiple family members received nominations for the Latin Grammys—in the same categories. Majo Aguilar and her uncle Pepe Aguilar are both competing in the “Best Ranchera/Mariachi Album” category, with Majo’s Mariachi y Tequila (Deluxe) and Pepe’s Que llueva tequila. Meanwhile, Majo is also nominated alongside her cousins Ángela and Leonardo Aguilar in the “Best Regional Mexican Song” category for their collaboration on the single Por el contrario with Becky G.

The Aguilars are no strangers to the spotlight, but these new nominations have brought renewed attention to their legacy. This family’s story is a blend of tradition, talent, and a deep-rooted love for Mexican music and culture, started decades ago by Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre, two icons who left an unforgettable mark on the ranchera genre.

The Roots: Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre

Antonio Aguilar, born in 1919 in Villanueva, Zacatecas, grew up with a love for singing, encouraged by his mother, who would often sing at their local church. Although his career began in aviation, Antonio soon shifted to music, a decision that turned out to be life-changing. Starting from humble beginnings, he became one of Mexico’s most influential ranchera singers and actors. In fact, he was the first Latin artist to perform six sold-out shows at New York’s Madison Square Garden, a huge milestone at the time.

Flor Silvestre, born Guillermina Jiménez in Guanajuato in 1930, had her own incredible path to fame. Her father, though a butcher by trade, supported her passion for music and acting. She gained attention after winning a singing competition on XEW, one of Mexico’s biggest radio stations. It was on this radio station that she met Antonio, and by the time they acted together in a series of movies, it was clear they shared more than just a love for music. Married in 1959, they became one of Mexico’s most popular couples, both on and off-screen.

The Next Generation

The couple’s legacy didn’t stop with them. Their two sons, Antonio Aguilar Jr. and Pepe Aguilar, continued the family’s musical tradition, each adding their own twist to the Aguilar name.

Antonio Aguilar Jr., born in 1960, first appeared on screen at just 12 years old. His debut album, Toda mi vida, came years later and was produced by none other than his brother Pepe. Antonio Jr. has since carved out his own career in music and acting.

Pepe Aguilar, born in 1968 while his parents were on tour in the U.S., quickly made his mark as a musician and producer. Known for his powerful voice and dynamic stage presence, Pepe has received multiple Grammy Awards and built an impressive music career of his own. He has also collaborated with well-known Latin artists and today manages the family’s show, Jaripeo Sin Fronteras, a blend of music and equestrian performances.

The Third Generation

Pepe Aguilar’s children—Aneliz, Leonardo, and Ángela Aguilar—represent the third generation of Aguilars taking on the world of music. They bring a fresh twist to the family’s traditional ranchera roots, making them popular among young fans as well.

Aneliz Aguilar, born in 1998, works alongside her father in managing the family’s shows and social media presence. While she hasn’t pursued a singing career, she plays an important role behind the scenes, helping to keep the Aguilar brand thriving.

Leonardo Aguilar, born in 1999, has inherited his father’s musical abilities. Starting his solo career at a young age, Leonardo has released albums like Nueva Tradición with his sister Ángela and Gallo fino, produced by his father. His performances in Jaripeo Sin Fronteras have made him a fan favorite.

Ángela Aguilar, the youngest, was born in 2003 in Los Angeles, following a similar path as her father, who was also born during a tour. Ángela’s talent became apparent early on, and by her teens, she was nominated for a Grammy for her debut album Primero soy mexicana. Known for her renditions of classic ranchera songs, she has managed to connect with fans of all ages, blending the past and the present in her performances.

Meanwhile, Antonio Aguilar Jr.’s twin daughters, Majo and Susana Aguilar, have also become known in their own ways.

Majo Aguilar is following in her family’s footsteps with a music career. Her album Mariachi y tequila received critical attention and earned her nominations at the Latin Grammy Awards.

Susana Aguilar, while not actively pursuing a career in music, is known for her social media presence. She shares her life and covers of classic songs, showing her Aguilar family roots in her own way.
