Diary of a Future President Season 2 Preview

After more than a year of break, Disney+ series Diary of a Future President will return to our screen for its second season this summer, with all of its 10 episodes premiering on the online streaming platform on Wednesday, August 18. The series had its last release on January 17, 2020, but finally, after the long wait, the characters we know and love will be back.

A trailer had just been released, which follows lead actress Tess Romero who plays the Cuban-American character Elena Cañero-Reed as she enters her seventh grade of middle school. For the second season, the series will pick up on where the first season left off, continuing Elena’s origin story while she experiences the ups and downs of being a middle school student which will eventually set her on the path to becoming United State’s President. The Diary of a Future President Season 2 cast includes Jane The Virgin actress Gina Rodriguez, who returns for the second season as she plays Elena’s future, grown-up self and conscience who constantly gives her advice and guides her through this stage of her life as the teenager experiences major changes.

Several cast members who will be coming back for the anticipated second season will be Carmina Gray who plays Elena’s best friend Sasha and we will see her have a new boyfriend. We will also see Charlie Bushnell who plays the Elena’s brother whose story of coming out of the closet and the struggles that comes with it will surely be prominently featured. Finally, Orange is the New Black star Selenis Leyva who plays Elena’s mother Gabi will also be back, and according to reports, the character will be allowing her boyfriend Sam (played by Michael Weaver) to move in to their home. It will be interesting to see how the dynamic of the family will change following these changes. Other stars we expect to see for the second season are Jessica Marie Garcia as Camila, Sanai Victoria as Melissa, Harmeet Pandey as Jessica, Brandon Severs as Liam, and Nathan Arenas as Danny.

Series creator and showrunner Ilana Peña, whose personal life during her own adolescence is the basis of the show’s story, will also be back as director and executive producer. Gina Rodriguez, aside from being part of the main cast, will also be back as executive producer and she will also be directing the second season’s first episode. The show will be produced by Rodriguez’s company I Can & I Will.

The series currently holds an approval rating of 100% on the website Rotten Tomatoes based on 8 reviews. According to Common Sense Media, the show tackles topics that are worthy talking points for families such as dealing with emotions, stress, and difficult people, and other more mature topics which could inspire questions from children depending on their awareness, such as sexuality. The feel-good show, Common Sense Media added, features a diverse cast, a strong family, and a hardworking tween who aspires to achieve great things.

The show was nominated for several awards at the 2020 Imagen Foundation Award: Best Young Actor for Television for series lead Tess Romero, Best Music Composition for Film or TV for Joey Newman, and Best Music Supervision for Film or TV for Janet Lopez. The series’ first season was also nominated for Outstanding Kids & Family Programming at the GLAAD Media Awards.
