Colman Domingo roars into Oz for Wicked: For Good sequel

Hollywood’s golden moment meets the Emerald City. Acclaimed actor and playwright Colman Domingo has officially joined the cast of Wicked: For Good, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2024 blockbuster Wicked, stepping into the role of the Cowardly Lion.
The announcement came straight from the film’s official Instagram account on Monday, with a playful video showing Domingo surrounded by plush lions, ending with his confident sign-off: “See you in Oz.” The post sent social media into a frenzy, confirming weekend rumors that had fans wildly speculating about who would voice the beloved character.

Directed by Jon M. Chu, Wicked: For Good continues the sweeping cinematic adaptation of the hit Broadway musical that reimagined the world of The Wizard of Oz. Domingo joins an all-star ensemble that includes Ariana Grande as Glinda, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum.
Chu revealed in an interview with Deadline that he personally reached out to Domingo via Instagram to offer the part. “It’s not a ton of lines,” Chu admitted, “but maybe you have a little time. I know you’re busy. I’ll come to you.” Domingo’s answer was classic: “Why the f— not. Let’s go.”
Domingo’s addition only amplifies the film’s star power. A two-time Academy Award nominee, Primetime Emmy winner, and one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential People of 2024, Domingo’s career has been defined by both daring performances and cultural resonance. Whether on stage, screen, or behind the scenes, his presence in Wicked: For Good promises to bring both gravitas and warmth to one of Oz’s most endearing characters.

What to Expect from Wicked: For Good
The sequel picks up right where the first film left off, exploring the aftermath of Elphaba and Glinda’s parting. Now, Elphaba is branded an enemy of the state, while Glinda finds herself entangled in the politics of power, manipulated by the Wizard, once again played by Jeff Goldblum.
Fans were quick to dissect the trailer released earlier this year, which teases the arrival of Dorothy, seen walking down the yellow brick road with her companions, a hint that her story could play a larger role than it did in the stage version.
Both Wicked films are adapted from the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical (based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel) and were shot simultaneously at Sky Studios Elstree in the UK between December 2022 and January 2024, a production that endured delays during the Hollywood actors’ strike.

The first Wicked film soared to become the highest-grossing movie of 2024 in the UK, earning 10 Oscar nominations and winning two, for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Expectations are sky-high for Wicked: For Good, which is set to hit theaters on November 21, 2025, almost exactly a year after its predecessor’s release.
With Colman Domingo stepping into the role of the Cowardly Lion, the sequel promises not only more magic and music, but also heart, courage, and the unmistakable charisma that only he can bring to Oz.
