Colman Domingo Gave Us a Masterclass in Met Gala Hosting

The Met Gala has always been fashion’s biggest night, but 2025 was a standout. This year, the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” was about more than just clothing. It was about legacy, about identity, and the subtle power of purposeful style. And no one demonstrated this better than Colman Domingo.

As soon as it was announced that Domingo would co-chair the gala with Anna Wintour, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and A$AP Rocky, the atmosphere shifted. Colman wasn’t just another name on the list but the embodiment of the message in motion. An Emmy-winning actor, director, playwright, and activist, Domingo has built a career deeply rooted in storytelling, and he brought that same profound depth to the steps of the Met.

For his debut, he donned custom Valentino: a dramatic pleated blue cape that swept the floor, coupled with a sharply tailored suit underneath. But this wasn’t about making a flashy entrance. There was deep symbolism woven into every part. Domingo mentioned that the look was inspired by Othello, kings, and a freed enslaved man who wore his finest superfine blue wool suit as a tribute to himself. The cape was a tribute to Black nobility, historical resilience, and the powerful transformation of pain into a commanding presence.

And when he entered the museum, cape removed, suit revealed, it was clear: Colman Domingo knows how to dress. But more importantly, he knows how to make a statement with his wardrobe. From the patterned tie to the polka dot flower on his lapel, his look was expressive and layered. It was part dandy, part dignified, bold yet grounded.

It was also a direct tribute to the late André Leon Talley, a longtime legend of the Met Gala and Vogue editor known for his capes, charisma, and fearless flair. He honored the fashion icon’s legacy by showing what it looks like when a Black man embraces his power and dresses the part.

As a co-chair, Domingo helped set the tone for the entire event. He nailed the assignment down to the details, including the daffodils that adorned the carpet, a flower linked to both queer and Black cultural expression. His outfit’s blue outfit matched them perfectly.

Latinos That Shined in the 2025 Met Gala

This year’s Met Gala had fewer Latinx guests than in previous years, but those who attended? They were nothing short of spectacular.

Lupita Nyong’o, who was born in Mexico, showed everyone how elegance and a touch of daring can coexist. She wore a dramatic blue Chanel cape over a sleek, structured dress, radiating old-school Hollywood glamour.

Bad Bunny brought a piece of Puerto Rico to Fifth Avenue with his brown Prada suit, oversized bag, and a pava hat, right out of the island’s countryside.

Maluma channeled the vibrant energy of a zoot suit with a bold custom ensemble by Willy Chavarría: teal and navy, complete with a flower pinned to his lapel and a wide-brim hat.

Jenna Ortega embraced a sculptural vibe with a Balmain dress made out of rulers (yes, actual rulers). It might not have hit the exact theme, but it was definitely memorable.

Shakira went for a sweet and simple look in bubblegum pink, sporting a Prabal Gurung dress with matching gloves. Maybe not the boldest fashion choice, but as always, she looked like a star.

J Balvin favored the soft power route with an all-pink suit, complemented by Valentina Ferrer, who wowed in a red and polka dots Marc Jacobs gown.

Georgina Rodríguez, boasting her Argentine roots, made her Met Gala debut in a sleek black lace slip dress by Alessandra Rich.

And Zoe Saldaña, as always, effortlessly balanced masculine and feminine vibes in a structured Thom Browne outfit that toyed with proportions.

The 2025 Met Gala centered Black elegance and highlighted that style goes beyond mere fabric. And at the core was Colman Domingo: standing tall, narrating a story, and wearing history with pride.
