‘Chespirito’ – The story behind the stage name
Roberto Gómez Bolaños is a name that echoes strongly in the history of Latin American television. Creator of unforgettable characters like El Chavo del 8, El Chapulín Colorado, El Doctor Chapatín, and El Chompiras, he was also one of the most ingenious writers Mexico has ever produced. But few know where his nickname ‘Chespirito’ comes from.
The name wasn’t his idea. It came about early in his career as a screenwriter in the film industry, when he had already proven to have a special knack for writing comedy. It was during the filming of “Los Legionarios,” a movie for which he wrote the script, that director Agustín Delgado dubbed him “Chespirito.”

The reason was simple and flattering: he thought Gómez Bolaños was like a “little Shakespeare.” In Spanish, that would be “Shakespearecito.” The nickname was phonetically adapted to a Mexican style and became “Chespirito.”
The nickname was a nod not just to his remarkable writing talent but also to his height. Standing at just 5 feet 3, the diminutive ‘Little’ suited him perfectly. Gómez Bolaños embraced the moniker naturally, and it became a signature part of him throughout his entire career.
Before becoming one of the most recognized faces on television, Gómez Bolaños studied engineering at UNAM, though he never practiced. His journey took him through advertising, radio, and eventually television, where he discovered the perfect space to unleash his creativity. In the ’50s, he wrote scripts for comedy films and later created his own sketch show, which went on to capture an audience of over 300 million viewers worldwide.

Chespirito’s legacy also lives on in the phrases that left a mark on generations of viewers. Each character had their own catchphrases that became part of everyday language in many Spanish-speaking countries:

Roberto Gómez Bolaños passed away on November 28, 2014, but his legacy endures. That whimsical nickname, which started as a joke among colleagues, is now synonymous with laughter, memories, and a happy childhood for millions of people.
