Chef Rogelio: A Culinary Maestro Crafting Afro-Latino Identity in the Heart of LA | Storytellers

Los Angeles, known for its diverse and eclectic culinary scene, has been graced by the vibrant and delicious flavors of a culinary artist hailing from Panama, this local mastermind is none other than Chef Rogelio. Chef Rogelio who identifies as “Afro Laribian” which is an Afro, Latin and Caribbean descendant all mixed into one. From his Panamanian roots to becoming the head chef at Caribbean Soul Kitchen LA, he is not just a tale of culinary success, but also a personal success story surrounding perseverance of personal identity, resilience, and the importance of creating one’s space in a world where fitting in can be a challenge.

Chef Rogelio reflects on his upbringing in the U.S. within the Latino community, emphasizing the struggles he faced due to his darker complexion. “It was always rough,” he shares, delving into the complex issue of colorism within his own community. This struggle created a rift between him and a clear identification with either the Latino or Black communities.

He says, “The whole issue of me not being able to fit in somewhere is what caused me to come up with my own space for myself to exist.”

Amidst the challenges of identity, Chef Rogelio understands the importance of storytelling, especially for those in the Afro-Latino community. “Know that there is a group of us where you are accepted,” he encourages. His narrative becomes a beacon for those grappling with similar issues, assuring them that they have a place where their stories and identities are celebrated.

The foundation of Chef Rogelio’s love for food was laid by his grandfather, Alfred Barnett, who instilled in him a passion for traditional Panamanian dishes like arroz con pollo, ensalada de papa,  sopas, and sancocho. “Those flavors stuck with me,” he reminisces, highlighting the deep connection between his culinary artistry and the cultural roots that shape his creations. For Chef Rogelio, every plate is a canvas, a masterpiece waiting to transport diners to the heart of Panama. “My canvas is your plate.”
