Blacktinidad’s Women’s History Month Special Features Aida Rodríguez

In a special sit down interview for Women’s History Month, comedian, advocate, and author Aida Rodriguez opened up about her journey, identity, and the mission behind her work. With her trademark cleverness and as a comedian who will always speak her mind, Rodriguez sheds light on her unique perspective in the industry especially as a woman of color.

As someone who has always identified with her Afro-Latino lineage she has had to make an adjustment to her own identity and really pay homage to those that are often forgotten, she now identifies as Afro-Indigenous. “I had to make an adjustment” she stated on Blacktinidad, further adding “I want to hold space for people who are darker than me and exist in a space where they don’t have the privilege that I have sometimes from my complexation.” Reminiscing on how she grew up, Rodriguez navigated the complexities of embracing one’s culture, having always been around her Puerto Rican roots it wasn’t until 2021 when she reunited with her father that she understood got a first hand glimpse of her Dominican side. This fusion of cultures has shaped her identity and how she views things today.

Rodriguez’s journey into comedy didn’t happen overnight; she always knew she possessed a natural flair for the arts. Reflecting on her childhood, she reminisces about her early love for performing, influenced by shows like “I Love Lucy” she always said that she knew she was “Going to be a star.” Despite dabbling in modeling, it was her move to California that solidified her passion for acting. However, she clarifies that her pursuit of these creative endeavors isn’t fueled by fame or riches but rather by a genuine desire for artistic expression.

At the centerpiece of Rodriguez’s message of artistic expression is the power of language and the need to reclaim narratives that have been exploited in the industry, particularly within Black and Latino communities. She emphasizes the significance of representation, recognizing the void in mainstream media “When it comes to telling authentic Latino stories, especially those of women and queer individuals.”

In the male-dominated world of comedy, Rodriguez has faced a plethora of hurdles, particularly from what she terms as “gatekeepers”straight white men who often disrespect her and perpetuate pay discrepancies. Despite these challenges, Rodriguez remains confident in her purpose, which is to inspire others and effect change within the industry.

Her latest project has been inspiring the masses, her book “Legitimate Kid,” is one that every reader who is looking for an inspiration in their life should read. Describing herself as a “writer first,” Rodriguez is committed to crafting stories that resonate with everyday people from marginalized communities. She views her book as a “love letter to the hood” a testament to the roots of all the people that look like her and have the same story, and a call for solidarity and genuine representation within the Afro-Latino community.

For Rodriguez, the importance of inclusive storytelling extends beyond entertainment; it’s about promoting “healing and forgiveness.” She envisions her book as a motivation for dialogue and understanding, aiming to build a bridge that creates empathy and understanding. She is grateful for all the love that she gets from fans but wants people to know it didn’t come overnight, there are still challenges that she faces. But ultimately, Rodriguez’s message is one of resilience, empowerment, and authenticity. Through her comedy, advocacy, and writing, she continues to champion the voices of the unheard, encouraging the younger generation to “find strength in solidarity” and to ensure that ALL Latino stories are told and celebrated. As she continues to break barriers and challenge norms, Aida Rodriguez stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for marginalized communities everywhere.
